“Thus ends the story of child-meets-monster, and so begins the adventure of the most unlikely friendship,” Mom closes the book she was reading. “That’s my favorite story,” Lottie yawns while tucked into bed. “Is that why you want me to read it to you every night?” Mom teases from a bedside chair. Lottie smiles, “Yeah.” “Even though we have plenty of other books to read?” Mom points to the bookshelf. “Yeah.” “Most of which you’ve never even given a chance?” says Mom through her teeth, pretending to be angry. “Yeah,” Lottie giggles. Mo...

Trust me when I say that nobody would want to leave their six million dollar condo, if they had one, to catch a flight to a yearly business ritual in the midwest. My ride to the airport arrives right on time, but not early. It’s a brand new Hummer limousine like I demanded, although the exterior could use a wash and a wax. The driver welcomes me and opens the door for me, as he should. He was smiling, but I could tell that he wasn’t really happy with his job. It wasn’t so much his mouth that gave it away, but his eyes were sad. He really sho...

“Is this the place?” “This is the spot.” “Cool. I’ve never interrogated anybody in a car trunk before.” “It’s not that exciting.” “Not even your first time?” “No. Remember, one of us needs to have our gun pointed at him the entire time or he might try somethin’.” “What do I look like?” “The guy that needs to pop the trunk. Forget it. I’ll make sure to hold my gun on him.” “Alright, fine. Poppin’ it.” “Now I’m only gonna ask you this once, what’s the-” “It’s 7-30-93! It’s 7-30-93!” “That was easy.” “Call the boss.” “Way ahead of you.” “What’s...

Growing up in a family of hunters was the best place for someone like me. I was destined to be a hunter. My parents thought so too. Dad’s side has a tradition of waiting to see the child before deciding on a name. First time my mom held me and looked into my eyes she said, “This boy’s a Hunter.” At least that’s what I was told. I wasn’t there. My parents were moral hunters. Skill-wise they were amazing. They took the time to teach me how to kill anything painlessly, and explained how it’s sin to do otherwise. “If animals don’t torment thei...

Another fantastic spot for a person like me is a shopping centre. A shopping centre is a fancy way of saying outdoor mall or shopping district. Best retail centers for me have trees and umbrellas. Nobody wants to talk to anyone while they’re roasting like a worm surrounded by cement, especially a stranger. This is why I like my spot. There are not enough trees. However, the stores make sure there’s at least some artificial shade on the sidewalks. My story takes place in this spot on a sunny summer day. Before I started my after...

The city market is a great place for me. I thrive around people that have time to talk. Funny thing about areas with dense populations is that most people don’t have time to talk. At a city market though, on a Sunday, you’ve got time to talk. Know what I mean? Place is my sanctuary. Convinced some baristas at City Market Coffee that I’m related to Eminem and a secret millionaire who got his money while crypto was hot. Got some lady at the Bloom Baking Company to believe I was my high school quarterback and that I went to school with Patrick...
