“Cut!” David called. I left my arm draped around Cinthia’s shoulder. The crew dimmed the lighting, giving our eyes a break from the faux desert sun while David reviewed the footage with the continuity director. Cinthia squinted at me, she hadn’t pulled away yet. “Gombae!” The 4 of us lifted our glasses, Ji-Eun and I shielding ours from view as we sipped the foul liquid. The TV on the opposite wall was playing K-Pop videos. I watched as Jun-Ho of One-Life drove a tiny yellow SUV up a miniature hill until he spilled out. The footage cut to a different field full of purple flowers and ballet dancers with another member of One-Life in the foreground, dancing with a yellow duck floatie around his waist. The video cut once more to a living room scene of the full band in plush bathrobes, jumping on furnitu...

2:55. Jo clicked her mechanical pencil, then jabbed it against her desk, the graphite disappearing. She repeated. Once. Twice. More times than she could count. 2:55. Still. How is that even possible? Now Jo traced the rings of the lifeless wood, flattened into elongated patterns. She imagined the rings speaking to her, as though her pencil were a stylus revealing a story older than the building she sat in.
