Teeth….sharp, crooked brown teeth framed in a mouth twisted into a thin grin. That’s all I saw before I moved. I imagine the breath escaping that mouth smells just as foul as the teeth look. Where I’m sitting now, resting, trying to regain some semblance of sanity, I try to recall the detail of that awful episode. Chepi is sitting an arm’s length away from me, trying to catch her breath. If it wasn’t for her scream and warning to escape, I think I might have been in more pain than just my wings and lungs aching right now. “What just hap...

“Did you know that, when the wind stirs the leaves on the tree branches, the sound you hear is actually the Tree Elfin's dresses hustling?” I look sideways to my friend as we sit side by side on an old dried-up tree log. He’s fluffy and soft, pencil gray with patches of white around his big floppy ears and liquorice black eyes, a wiggly chocolate brown nose, whiskers that droop downwards and two enormous white front teeth sticking out over his under lip. His name is Frop and he’s a rabbit. “You don’t say”, I answer him. It wouldn’t be the ...

I’m staring at a mint green wall. One year. The same wall has been several other colours in the span of exactly one year. So have its opposite and adjoining companions. Baby-blue, dove grey, sunflower yellow, egg white, terracotta brown, even burnt orange, and oh so many more. If I’m lucky, this wall will stay mint green, at least for another year or three. My eyes fall on the light switch mounted on this wall. A round, elegantly white porcelain object with a same coloured toggle switch, reminiscent of a doorbell from days gone by, those r...

Emerging from the sea, my body - although glistening like that of a mermaid with the seawater sliding down my skin (or so I hope) - is very tired after battling through the rough seas to reach this piece of land in the middle of nowhere. My muscles are cramping as I crawl very un-ladylike onto the beach….the beach that is now my haven. And if I have anything to say about it after my recent endeavour, I would very much like it to be very temporary. This is so ridiculous! How long is this song going to be stuck in my head? Maybe I was just imag...

Not that you’d notice underneath all the charm and good manners, but I’ve been struggling a bit. “Zap” Liar….Okay, I’ve been struggling quite a lot actually….struggling to settle down into a nice, healthy relationship with a nice, stable girl, struggling to separate work hours from my personal life, struggling to respect the idea of even having a balanced life…. Work, home, video games, gym, drinks with school mates…but only on some weekends, work, home…and repeat…like the cycles on a washing machine. Sitting with the translucent glass bal...

HOW DO YOU SPELL LOVE?She’s always had love in her life, Chelsea thought, as she sat staring into the nothingness of her bedroom wall. She had a love for music, singing, creating, animals and hanging out with friends. But that was common love, not the kind that could break her heart, made her act goofy, or kept her up at night because she couldn’t keep herself from picturing a future with a particular person. It wasn’t until much later though that this would become part of her life, when she actually stumbled across the person that would bec...

It was our weekend visit with Mom. Usually we would pack as soon as we got home from school, but this time was different. We started packing the previous night, everything that we wanted to take with, not just clothes for a visit. We were going about it very silently so that we wouldn’t disturb my dad or his fiancée. They weren’t supposed to know that this was the last time we would be packing our stuff in their house. The following morning, very early, my little brother, Joe, would sneak our bags out into the garden, hiding it from sight, w...
