Best Journalism Writing Scholarships in 2025

To apply for this scholarship, students must be enrolled at an accredited college or university in Connecticut or be a Connecticut resident enrolled in university in any state or country. Applications should include a 500-word essay about a current event that captured your interest, how you stayed informed, and more.

The new Richard P. Johns award is available to all Quill and Scroll seniors. Scholarships can be used for tuition, room and board at any college or university that offers a major in journalism or related areas of communications. Scholarships range from $500 to $1,500. The scholarship committee will determine the amounts based on the applicants’ qualifications and recommendations.

The Dale Runnion Scholarship will be presented to a current AGR undergraduate who plans to pursue a career in agrimarketing, journalism, advertising or public relations. The completion or plans to complete a course in livestock judging or evaluation, campus and/or community leadership and active participation in journalistic activities will receive strong consideration.

Leroy F. Aarons dedicated his life to journalism and advancement of the LGBTQ community. This scholarship award will provide up to $5,000 in tuition funding to an LGBTQ student who plans a career in journalism and is committed to furthering NLGJA’s mission of fair and accurate coverage of the LGBTQ community.

The Ohio News Media Foundation, in alignment with its mission of achieving the highest standards of excellence and professionalism in all phases of journalism and newspaper publishing, awards scholarships to high school and collegiate students annually. All applicants must be Ohio high school seniors or college/university students.

This scholarship will be awarded each year to a Houston area high school senior interested in a career in media. Applicants must choose one of multiple essay questions related to media, advertising, and Houston media mentor Sandy Schenker Capell, to answer in 500 words or less.

Each year, NABJ awards scholarships to enrich and support the academic experience of students pursuing a career in journalism, media and communications. An NABJ scholarship selection committee selects awardees based on NABJ’s scoring system and adherence to the application guidelines and requirements. Students may apply for only one (1) NABJ scholarship each.

Each year, ten scholarships of $4,000 each are awarded based on academic achievement, leadership experience and volunteer service. Applicants must include an essay on the following topic: "Tell us what question you think we should ask you… and now, answer it."

The National Press Club is proud to offer this fellowship for graduate students in journalism. The Fellowship is named for Dennis Feldman, a club member who had a long career as a journalist and public relations adviser after putting himself through grad school at night. Winners will receive a one-time stipend of $5,000 to help defray post-graduate tuition costs.

The National Press Club, the leading professional organization for journalists, wants to recruit promising future journalists who will bring diversity to American journalism. The scholarship consists of a $5,000 one-year scholarship. The award can be renewed for up to three years for a total of $20,000 toward educational expenses.

The Richard G. Zimmerman Scholarship is named for a long-time National Press Club member who died in 2008 and endowed a scholarship in aid of high school seniors who wish to pursue a career in journalism. Recipients receive a one-time award of $5,000.

AWM Austin is proud to award scholarships to college students studying media (or a related field) at a university in the Austin area. Each applicant must include a personal statement stating their area of study and how this scholarship will further their career and educational goals.

The Aubespin scholarship honors Merv Aubespin, a former president of the National Association of Black Journalists who greatly helped inspire the creation of ACES. Applicants should have a commitment to a career in the editing of written materials.

The Walsh scholarship honors Bill Walsh, author, blogger, and longtime copy editor at the Washington Post. The Walsh scholarship will be awarded to an applicant who demonstrates the talent and passion for language that Bill had, and who aspires to pursue the craft of editing the news.

Underwritten by the New York Life Foundation, the New York Life Award offers $2,500 scholarships/travel stipends to ten students whose works explore death and personal grief. Sharing your story through art or writing can be a healing experience both for you and other teens who are grieving. Your creative work can help someone with similar experiences to you feel less alone.
