This is what happened after the storm . Seven days of torrential wind driven seasonal rain finally ended. The narrow quaint tree lined streets become a roaring rivers filled with floating rubbish and cars being tossed around resembling toys can be seen rushing being entangled in the water's fierce swift current. This community is tight-knit and courageous was surprisingly caught off guard with the unusual and unexpectedly amount that had fallen in a relative short time with never receiving a severe rain and possible flood warning. Unknown to the community the communication center had already been inundated with mud and water. Events pass so quickly in an attempt determined to escape the rising waters. Bewildered frantic people climbed through attic windows in an attempt to get to safety on the roof tops. Houses were uprooted from the foundation; some had terrified helpless bewildered passengers still sitting on the roof frozen as like statues with fear while trying to wave white flags no one there to notice their fruitless distress signal. People who attempted swimming to safety but even the most experienced swimmers were overtaken by the fast untamed moving unpredictable current pulling them under the water not to resurface the water becoming their floating graves. Helps arrived many hours later by boat rafts evacuating those sitting outside on the roof tops; some managed to cling to still standing motionless trees. Many of the people were wearing wet ripped dirty clothes many had cuts and broken bones, hungry crying children, some too young to understand what was happening and the elderly in shock and numbness were resisting the rescuers' assistance. Parents crying overwhelmed by the vision of possessions being swept away those tears were also those of thanks giving their families were safe. Many of the usual shelters were also overflowing with dirty foul smelling water. Rescued families needed to be relocated far away then the community had been in other floods usually. Boarding buses with only small kits to only heaven knowing where they would take up temporary shelter uncertain what was coming next. Families trying to locate missing family members posting notes on the bus terminal wall. People cling to their family pet for comfort sharing the food handed out on the bus. All types of communication centers were destroyed, engineers in an earnest attempt to get temporary phones and internet sites were being slowly restored, resulting in the news and information people were getting dripped out as slowly as maple syrup grotesque rumors were rampant, causing more distress and confusion to people already at their stress and uncertainty levels. People had to wait more than a week for the inspectors survey affected areas to declare some areas safe enough for people to return home weeks which felt like months for the earth to reclaim the flood waters and the return of the sun. Many families returning home found an empty lot where the family home once occupied. Some homes were sliced in half as a slice of bread. Houses that were standing were filled with rancid water, unsightly waterlogged furniture drying caked mud pushed into the house. The next problem for the first responders was to tackle the grim and grotesque duty combing through piles of cars finding the drivers in cars with their seat belts still fastened. People trap within trash piles it would be the deaths that would affect the responders for year. Family pets that made it to higher ground hungry, cold and frightened and frantically jumping into the arms of their rescuers . Slowly communications were restored providing news of missing families members location and what aide measures that were in progress. Food centers were set up along with tent cities erected by the corps of engineers relieving the woefully overcrowding in the shelters. The red cross and local communities of faith provided comfort and support a local laundry company set up free washing machines so people could clean what little clothes they managed to recover. This had not been the first time this community had flooded almost to the point where their town was wiped off the map from the unpredictable seasonal rains several years ago. Some families reached their unbearable breaking point deciding not to rebuild to leave what remained abandoned which nature started to already reclaim. Slowly families that remained rebuilt replaced belongings to form new and optimist memories. People that stayed and rebuilt are fully aware that the next time the seasonal rain comes their way life could once again be washed away but this community is strong, resilient and has strong faith in each other.
