The storm inside Jamie threatened to shatter the fragile happiness in their small apartment as Alexis burst through the door, her eyes full of excitement. Jamie studied her, taking in her auburn hair, her green eyes dancing with joy, and the infectious smile that had first captured his heart.

“Jamie! I got the promotion!” she exclaimed. Alexis had worked for this moment, pouring her heart and soul into her career. She had faced her share of struggles, the grueling process of managing a team who doubted her abilities. Alexis had fought to prove herself, working late nights and weekends and planning each project to ensure its success.

Instead of sharing her elation, Jamie’s mind raced. He couldn’t help but picture Alexis’s boss, with his bright green eyes and chiseled jaw—the charming and handsome man who handed her this opportunity.

“Congratulations, babe,” Jamie said, his voice devoid of emotion, his smile strained. As he tried to push away the thoughts, another one surfaced. He saw the man touching her cheek during a late-night meeting, taking advantage of her vulnerability. The vivid image made his heart and stomach churn, casting a shadow over Alexis’s success. That notion that she got promoted because her boss wanted to sleep with her gnawed at him like a persistent itch.

Alexis furrowed her brow, sensing the tension in the room. “What’s wrong, Jamie? I thought you’d be happy for me.”

“I am,” he replied, the words tasting like vinegar on his tongue. “It’s just... do you think you got this promotion on your merits alone?” The question slipped out, spurred by the whirlwind of doubt swirling inside him.

Alexis’s eyes narrowed, her joy eclipsed by shock. “Of course I do,” she said, her voice shaking. “Why would you even ask that?”

Jamie knew he had crossed a line as he looked into her eyes. He wanted to celebrate her success, but those whispers had a vice-like grip on his heart.

“Sorry,” he murmured, his eyes brimming with regret. “I just... I don’t know what came over me.”

They stood there, caught in a moment, the echoes of their love strained by the weight of unspoken fears.

There have been two moments in my life when I’ve ached for someone to step into my shoes. To see the world through my eyes. The first, when I was just a child, a spirited and effervescent soul with more words than leaves on an ancient oak. My family belittled me. They thought I was scatterbrained, a clichéd ditsy blond. Why couldn’t they peer past the façade and truly see me?

The second time is with you right now. I can see the storm brewing inside you, a tempest of jealousy. I wish more than anything that you could crawl into my skin. To explore every nook and cranny, feel the fierce loyalty and unwavering strength that is me. I wish you would believe that I will never leave your side.

Jamie looked into Alexis’s eyes, trying to find the right words. “I’m sorry,” he said, his voice soft. “I guess you just got the short end of the stick with me.”

Alexis tried to laugh it off, but Jamie could see the pain hidden behind her smile. The sparkle in her eyes had dimmed, replaced by the shadow of a doubt. However, she was determined to salvage the evening, and they had a drink to celebrate success. She poured herself a glass of pinot while Jamie, his thoughts still clouded, reached for the bottle of whiskey.

As the night wore on, Alexis sipped her wine, savoring the sweet taste of victory. Jamie, however, continued to pour himself drink after drink, the amber liquid numbing the turmoil within. With each sip, the weight of his emotions grew heavier, and the walls he had built to protect himself crumbled.

“Alexis, how can you just sit there and celebrate?” Jamie slurred, his words laced with bitterness.

Alexis looked at him, concern etched on her face. “Jamie, what’s wrong? Can we talk about it?”

“You don’t understand anything,” he snapped, taking another swig from his glass. “You just keep celebrating while I’m here, drowning.”

As Jamie’s words grew harsher, he watched Alexis’s face fall as she withdrew into herself.

“Jamie,” she whispered, “I’m here for you. I want to help you through this.”

Her words fell on deaf ears as he continued to drink, each gulp plunging him further into a haze of self-pity and resentment. Watching his girlfriend shrink before him, he couldn’t help but wonder when the confident woman he loved became so insecure.

I can’t bear it when you look at me that way. Each glance is another slice, chipping away at our fragile connection. It is death by a thousand cuts, and I’m left bleeding.

Would it be better if I retreated from the world, sheltering myself from anyone you are threatened by? I’ll do it in a heartbeat, but it feels like no matter what, you still see our relationship as teetering on the edge of disaster.

It is moments like these I wish I could pull you close, wrap my arms around you, and whisper in your ear: “You’re safe, I promise.” I want you to know that my love for you is unwavering, and my loyalty to you is unshakable. But you pull away, and I am left alone.

Jamie spiraled, each moment reinforcing the irrational belief that Alexis would leave him. His chest tightened with pressure, and he knew he needed to get away.

He grabbed the car keys with trembling hands, desperate for an escape. Alexis blinked and stepped in front of him. “You can’t drive, Jamie. You might get hurt,” she pleaded.

He scoffed, his mind clouded by pain and alcohol. “I wouldn’t be so lucky.”

Alexis lunged for the keys, desperate to protect him from himself. Jamie resisted, but he was fighting a losing battle. Despite his inner turmoil, he was careful not to hurt her. After a struggle, she snatched the keys from his grip.

Feeling defeated, Jamie stormed out of the apartment. It wasn’t until the biting winter air hit him he realized he’d forgotten his coat. Shivering, he stumbled into the freezing night, his thoughts still spinning out of control.

As he wandered, his body numbed by the cold, Jamie didn’t notice the headlights approaching in the distance. The car drew closer, its bright beams illuminating the street. Jamie's world went black just as the blinding glare filled his vision.

You don’t see the damage you inflict, and I’ve become a master at hiding my wounds. You’ve never laid a hand on me or hurt me that way. Still, I bleed, withering away from the emotional turmoil that seems to follow us like a shadow. Our love has become a battlefield, scarred by the wounds of insecurity and mistrust.

I am trapped in a cage of my making. The door is open, and I know I can spread my wings and fly away. But the thought of leaving you fills me with dread, for I fear that you would shatter into a million pieces if I were to take flight. I can’t bear the thought of you breaking.

Alexis sat by Jamie’s side, her voice a constant presence in the sterile hospital room. “Do you remember the time we went hiking and got caught in that downpour?” she asked, her voice shaking.

“We’ve never been so soaked in our lives, but we laughed so hard, didn’t we?”

As she spoke of their happiest memories, Jamie squeezed his eyes shut. “Jamie, I wish I could take away your pain,” she said. “I don’t know what the future holds for us, but I believe in us.”

“Alexis, I am broken, scattered, and cracked,” he whispered. Alexis leaned in closer, her breath warm on his cheek.

“Jamie, broken glass can be put back together and made into something beautiful,” she breathed. “We can do the same with you.”

As they sat there, Jamie couldn’t shake the sense of brokenness that weighed on his heart. It felt like every part of him had splintered. He knew he should let Alexis go, but for now, this would do. This was enough. With a sheepish grin, he looked at Alexis and said, “Congratulations on your promotion, Alexis. You deserve it.”
