Romance

Brains could blind the beauty. With this philosophy Jaideep was quite sure that he will be able to get closer to Jotsna someday, sometime, somewhere, and somehow. He was also sure that he was not a match to her in any other manner whatsoever.

Jaideep had no qualms about his being very unhandsome in looks under any circumstances. Jaideep was aware he was neither macho in his built nor versatile in his vocabulary. Whenever he is on the verge of meeting a person of the opposite sex he suffers from constipation of speech and diarrhea of thoughts. The constipation of speech prevents him from moving forward in establishing a relationship and diarrhea of thoughts transports him to towns that terminate in no man’s land.

Uncertainty loomed large as to how long Jotsna will be around as she was brilliant in her studies, born to a reasonably well off parents with predictably high hopes for her bright future.

Jaideep on the contrary was abound with infirmities and belonged to parents who were pulling on with great difficulty with their paltry income and painful parenthood.

This kind of scenario positioned Jaideep in a peculiar place with his mind imprisoned in thoughts that had all the appearance of a dream most of the times and nightmare in rest of the times.

Jaideep was in the last year of his graduation and financial condition of the family automatically directed his thoughts to look for ways and means to support his family instead of looking for opportunity to admire her and advance in the direction that would lead to abysmal ending.

Jotsna while preparing hard for her examination to get past intermediate science with biology and zoology as major and thereafter appear in medical entrance examination and become a doctor, would at times walk past and some other times ride past the residence of Jaideep in a bike rendering him to a day dream that would last continuously for a few hours and then get repeated if she is not seen for a week or more.

There are rules and there are exceptions to the rule. With this clause in mind and culture to remind Jaideep had drawn a plan. Well the society to which they belonged and the nation of which they were citizens is India.

India is a country of diverse religions and cultures and believes in “Unity in Diversity”. The country celebrates all festivals and appreciates the sentiments of all members of the society.

In this background Jaideep had pinned his hope on the festival of colours which falls during February, the spring season, when weather is pleasant and emotions are in full force.

The festival of colors or Holi as it is called in India approached. In the society or the colony they belonged, they start coming out of their homes on this particular day after morning breakfast and preparation of sweets peculiar to the festival of Holi.

The children are the ones that come out to play with dry and water colours and ensure that they wear dresses which can be discarded by the end of the day for ever. In a few minutes one can see that the children are immersed in colour to an extent that they reach a state beyond recognition.

Thereafter the teenagers follow suit and male members indulge in pelting color balloons, spraying colours with the pump and paint the faces of each other with all sorts of colours both dry and wet.

The girls are the ones especially those in their teens, hiding their emotions and trying their best not to be soiled by colours and at the same time wanting to relish at the plight of their girlfriends and peers getting caught in the crossfire of colours and paint.

This was the kind of emotion and opportunity that Jaideep was looking for to capitalise.

As luck would have it, Jyotsna subjected one of her friends to getting exposed to being poured colour on her by a couple of teenage boys, and had a hearty laugh. This did not go very well with the friend of Jyotsna. Jaideep was watching the scenario from his balcony and observing carefully the anguish and anxiety of taking revenge in the eyes of the friend of Jyotsna.

Jaideep without wasting any time came to the rescue of the friend of Jyotsna even though damage was done but consoled her and asked her to take it in a sportsman spirit and assured her that she will also get an opportunity very soon to give back if she cooperated with Jaideep.

The friend naturally agreed to the proposal of Jaideep and allowed him discreetly to get to the balcony of Jyotsna’s house when she was watching all people outside in the middle of the courtyard. Jaideep as planned reached the balcony and put colors on Jyotsna to the view of her friend and to the plan and his lifetime satisfaction.

After having satisfied in his own mission and that of her friend, Jyotsna was informed of the plan and also advised to take it in the right spirit of the occasion as she expected of her friend.

Jyotsna shook her head in agreement and wished Jaideep a very happy and prosperous Holi.

Thus ended a blind date in a lively manner to the satisfaction of all parties, notwithstanding the importance of such celebrations and mingling of culture with nature.

Within the next few months Jyotsna qualified in the entrance examination she appeared and went to study her medicine and finally made a career as a medical practitioner.

Jaideep also got a job in the court and supported his family and got married after a few years to a girl of his liking and that of his parents.

Jaideep now becomes nostalgic when he remembers that incident every year when the festival of color approaches in the month of February, at the onset of the spring season.

His children also are allowed to play with colors and enjoy themselves. Jaideep came to know later that Jyotsna has joined a multispecialty hospital in the pathology department as a Pathologist.

The Holi festival sounds like a lot of fun. I've always wanted to go to one, but haven't found the opportunity yet. Reading your story, I only got a sense of Jaideep's perspective and not so much Jyotsna's, which didn't meet the prompt. I was a bit confused as to the blind date, because how I understood it as I read it, Jaideep just happened to talking to Jyotsna at the festival and it seemed that they already knew each other in some way? So I don't see how it could be a blind date. I don't know if it's just on my side, but it looks like...
