I scroll through pictures of guys. Tapping, reading, then tapping again. There aren’t any guys that fit my taste.

I sigh. I’m already twenty-two and I still don’t have a boyfriend. I'm kind of getting desperate nowadays.

I keep scrolling and see a not-bad-looking guy with glasses. I clicked on his profile and read through it. Yup. He’s my type for sure: funny, knows how to cook, likes to read watches anime, and is good at math.

I opened up the chat and text him.

Hi.

I waited for a little while, staring at the screen.

Hello.

I squealed and jumped up and down.

Um, what’s your name?

James Rodriguez, yours?

Amanda Gonzalez.

Cool, how old are you?

22

So, you’re in college?

Yeah. How about you?

I’m 24, and I'm in college, too.

Wow, do you have a job?

Uh, yes.

What do you work as?

Um, nothing special, just at a small store.

That’s nice. Hey, do you know Jacobs Stirling? He’s a really popular singer and model.

Uh, yeah sure.

I’m a really big fan of his. Plus, he’s about the same age as you.

Wow, I didn’t know that.

Yeah and he’s pretty cute.

Wow.

Yeah, one day I’m going to go to a concert and listen to him personally.

Why not now?

Well, I’m busy and I can’t afford a ticket

Oh, really?

Yeah, but it’s fine.

Well, I’m going to go now, bye.

Ok, bye.

I turn off my phone and let out a content sigh.

Days went by, then weeks, then months. We started dating, well, sort of. He never really wanted to meet up. I would always ask, but he would refuse. Until I was really curious one day…

Hi James

Hi, what's up?

Nothing... You?

Reading.

Cool. I'm watching anime

Nice, well, uh, what do you want to talk about?

Well…can we meet up, please?

Amanda, we’ve been through this before… I can’t

Why?

I’m busy with work and studies

If you’re so busy, how come you have time to text me for hours?

Well, I’m on my break. Plus, typing and studying are easier than talking and studying

Are you trying to hide something? You always find excuses to not see each other face to face. I already sent pictures of myself to you, but you still don’t want to meet.

Amanda…

What’s the point of this relationship if we can’t see each other’s faces?

Are you saying you want to break up?

Well, maybe if I can’t see your face anytime soon.

There was a long pause. I waited and stared at the screen, wanting to know his answer.

Fine... We should meet at a park. How does 5 sound?

Really?! That sounds great! Thank you!

I’ll send you the address.

Ok!

I plopped onto my bed and tried to go to sleep, but I was too excited to sleep.

The next day was a big deal for me. I dressed up in a white dress and a jean jacket - casual but cute.

I walked out of my dorm and locked the door. I opened the door to my car and climbed in. I had to use GPS to get to the park since I'd never been there before.

I arrived at the location and waited. I just stood there, looking around. Then an hour passed. I sat down on a bench, still looking. For another hour, I stopped looking, hoping my so-called boyfriend would show up. After another hour, I left.

At first, I thought someone called my name, but I ignored it and kept on walking.

James, I’m sorry but I can’t do this anymore. We need to break up.

There was no answer, not surprising. I went back to my dorm and cried.

To make myself feel better, a bought a concert ticket and decided to go. Jacobs' songs always make me feel better.

I drove to the concert and was instantly taken in by the crowd. When Jacobs came on stage, his eyes swept across the people and landed on me.

Jacobs sang a few songs and wrote some autographs, including mine.

“I have one last song for someone special. I would like to dedicate this song to someone…” he said.

The song he sang was sad but heartfelt. My heart couldn’t help but melt.

After, Jacobs walked off the stage and up to me and hugged me.

“H-huh?” I stammered.

“I’m so, so sorry Amanda…” he whispered.

“Wh-what do you mean?” Then it hit me. “No… Don’t tell me…” I was shaking my head.

“Yes, I’m your, or was, your online boyfriend. I’m sorry for ditching you-“ Jacobs began.

“Don’t talk to me!" I pushed Jacobs away. Tears were prickling my eyes again, threatening to rush out. "I don’t care if you’re one of the most popular singers right now, but no!” I said, cutting him off. I started to walk away, but Jacobs grabbed my arm.

“Wait! please let me explain!” he pleaded. “I was late meeting you because I had just come back from a concert! There was traffic and it was a long drive! When I arrived, I saw you walking away. I called your name, but you didn’t hear me…”

I look at him with a frown. “And why didn't you want to meet up with me in the first place?” I asked, raising an eyebrow.

“Well, I was afraid, scared, that you might use me…” said Jacobs. “But I thought we knew each other long enough that it would be okay. I decided I wanted to surprise you, and not just by being a singer, I wanted to give you this.”

He held out a necklace with a diamond shaped like a teardrop.

“Jacob…this is beautiful, but you didn’t have to give me this. I’m just a simple girl with simple needs,” I said.

Jacob laughed. “Well, I need, to pay you back for being late.”

“Thanks,” I smiled at him. I allowed him to put the necklace around my neck.

“So does this mean that we’re back again?” Jacobs asked.

“Yeah, well, you explained everything and I thought you needed a second chance,” I said.

“Thank you,” he replied. Then he jumped on stage and pulled me up with him.

Jacobs cleared his throat. “Excuse me? May I have your attention, please? I would like to introduce you to my girlfriend, Amanda."

There was an eruption of applause and groans. I couldn't help but feel embarrassed and proud.

Later that night I was in Jacobs' room.

“I could never have this big of a room,” I said as I twirl around.

“Really? It’s normal to me. I guess it’s because I grew up in a rich family,” Jacobs said.

“Geez, don’t rub it in,” I grumble, but then I laugh.

Then it got all quiet. Jacobs turned serious and looked at the floor. “Hey, do you want to live with me?” he mumbled. “I mean if you want.”

“Really? Of course! But I’m going to pay you, kind of like rent,” I laughed.

“No, no, don’t do that,” Jacobs said quickly.

“Why not?” I asked.

“Well, you’re my girlfriend. You shouldn’t do that,” he said firmly.

I paused for a moment. “Fine, all right,” I sighed.

Then I plopped down on Jacob’s bed.

“Why’d you do that?” I whispered.

“Do what?” he asked.

“Why’d you have to announce that I'm your girlfriend?” I said.

“Well,” started Jacobs, “I wanted everyone to know that I'm taken, by you.”

I blushed but show him my phone. “Here, see? The announcement went viral!”

I scrolled through all of the social media apps - Snapchat, Twitter, Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, etc. All of them have one thing going, Jacobs’ announcement.

“Woah,” he said, “that did spread like wildfire…”

I rolled my eyes, “Yeah, no kidding.”

Jacob leaned closer to me, slowly, slowly, and before I knew it, he kissed me. I kissed him back and he pinned me onto the bed. I kissed his neck and he does the same to me. I let out a moan and Jacobs made a muffled sound, between a laugh and a groan. I moaned again and then he bit me…
