I smoothed beige over freckles, made her already pink cheeks pinker.              I saw her through her first breakup, when the boy she had loved since they were small enough to play in mud, decided he preferred the girl he had only just met. I hid the evidence of her grief, red around her eyes, splotchy around her nose.      ...
