Reedsy is an astonishing website. Back when I joined in September 2019, I was really excited to share my stories and make new friends. Back then, we barely paid attention to points. The only way we would get points was by writing stories. I made this account because I noticed that Reedsy was becoming a gloomy place because of downvoting. All I wanted to do was make a change and hopefully bring Reedsy back to the cheerful place it was. Sadly, that is not what happened. It seems like everyone is point-obsessed these days. Upvoting is also becoming a really big problem. Some people are just upvoting each other to get higher on the leaderboard, not because their stories are good. Real writers who work hard for their points are falling off the leaderboard and being replaced by people who are just randomly being upvoted. I'm sorry if I ever upvoted someone who didn't deserve the points. Alt accounts on my stories are sharing their opinions and really opening my eyes. I never realized that upvoting for no reason was as bad as downvoting. In reality, it is. I believe that the marshmallows (an upvoting group) have good intentions and want to make sure that people who are downvoted still continue writing. I just believe that this constant upvoting is getting a bit out of hand. I know this is kind of hypocritical because I made this account to upvote people, but my intentions were just to bring Reedsy back to the peaceful and kind place it was. In my opinion, I believe that points should only be earned by stories (good ones). These past few days, I've been scrolling through accounts on Reedsy and seeing surprising things. I saw an account that had around 70 stories. These stories were very well written. When I check the karma points, they only had 1000. I also came across an account that had written around 5 stories, but they had around 8000 karma points. Where did we go wrong? Constant upvoting is causing unrest and is not letting serious writers go on the leaderboard. I am not trying to say that anyone who is on the leaderboard as of now doesn't deserve to be there. It's just that there are other writers who are working harder who should be there instead. The writers who aren't really working that hard but are gaining a large number of points should try to focus on writing more stories. If they work hard and focus on writing, maybe someday they will deserve to be on the leaderboard. To end off, I am closing this account. I will still talk to any friends I have made and comment on stories, but I will not be upvoting anymore. You may ask me to read your stories and give feedback, but that is it. I'm sorry if I've made people sad that they are not going to be able to be upvoted, but they should remember that points aren't important. If they focus on writing stories and put in hard work, the points will come naturally. I'd like to thank everyone who has supported me on this account, and the alt accounts that have opened my eyes. I hope that both upvoting and downvoting will stop, so Reedsy can become the peaceful and happy place it is supposed to be. Thank you so much for having me!

I just read it, yea the marshmallows can and should keep upvoting others, because they feel happy doing so along with others. Yet upvoting also has it's downsides, the marshmallows have been doing it responsibly, upvoting the people who they think should be/have lost a ton of points

No more unearned points from me... The marshmallow group should disperse and stop being an 'ill upvote you!" group. Honestly, the only points somebody should be getting are likes, approvals, or contest wins. That's all. I'm still a 'marshmallow floating in a cup of hot coco' but no longer the one that upvotes people. Being downvoted crazily isn't a valid reason to be upvoted anymore. Yea but that’s kinda the reason why I’m sad about this...cuz not all mallows agree. There’s probably nearly two dozen of us at this point, and half of those people haven’t even seen all this drama yet. I did. I agree with you that upvoting should stop, but I think part of the reason it came along was to help people who were being downvoted. I agree with Provem Wrong about the points issues but I think people below 18 should be able to post as long as they're on here primarily to write and improve their writing.

Because I saw people with the worst stories and movie imprints being on top 100. I used to feel sad. Which turned into hopeless ambition. I used to work so hard for my stories. I've been thinking this for a long time now, thank you for bringing it to light. I've only been upvoted by you and another author because I felt like everyone else was just getting so many points without even posting regularly. I feel guilty because I might've been the account you were talking about, except i have 4 and not 5 (which is worse). To be fair, I did get most points from the stories I had before, but I deleted all those and then wrote 4, so I've written more stories than it seems like. but anyway. yeah, I'm sorry. It takes effort both on the writing and on the actual effort put into being part of the community to get higher up. Like, while I don’t write as much as other authors, I’m on Reedsy a TON. I did, and now we’re chatting...I wish none of these alt accounts existed. Celeste, you are such an awesome person who created such an amazing and heartwarming group of people who want to spread joy and happiness. As I do believe constant upvoting is unnecessary, I still think that you should keep the marshmallow group. Maybe you and the marshmallows can give out critiques, or give shoutouts to talented writers that aren't very popular. I just wanted to let you know that I think you made a very valid decision. I really appreciate how kind and supportive you are, and I do agree, this whole upvoting/downvoting thing is getting so weirdly out of hand that it should just be done with.

Yes I read your bio and....yeah that's totally okay! I mean, it's YOUR opinion, but we agree with YOUR opinion! I'm sure the marshmallows will still come to the rescue, but maybe we'll be more...proactive? I'm not sure what word I should use to describe it. I guess only upvote author who deserve it? And maybe encourage people to read more of the author's stories instead of just upvoting them.

Hi Up Voter! I agree with you one hundred percent. I myself was obsessed with karma points and upvotings until a few days ago, and your story shed new light on things. Upvoting can have adverse effects, too, and that is very true. I just wish these days that the upvoting and downvoting options had never been there :( We can always support and encourage one another when it comes to writing, and that is so much better than upvoting because that actually helps us as writers in the long run.
