Fantasy Science Fiction Thriller

I watched him as he lit the last candle and blew out the flame from the match. He turned to all of us.

“Let us pray.” He said.

We all bowed our heads and Seth began the prayer,

“May we be out of harm’s way during this time as we prepare for our experiment, thank you.”

Everyone's head rose up from bowing and all eyes were glued to Seth.

“Has any one got an owl or a bat, yet?” Seth said.

Someone from the crowd lifted their hand. Seth called him. The guy stood up with this cage. It had a sheet over it. When he lifted the sheet up a bat was frantically flapping his wings. The poor little guy was scared I said to myself. The light was making him squirm more.

“Good you began your assignment.” Seth said. “Does anyone have an owl by chance?”

The man holding the bat said, “I almost had an Owl.”

Seth looked around the room, “Anyone else got lucky?” No one raised their hand. “Did any one even try?” Seth said with frustration in his voice. He took a deep sigh in. “Listen, We have to make tons of hybrids before this week is up. We must work harder into getting our quota met…You need to step on it or you’re going to make the boss very upset and I don’t think she will like it if we have to wait until the next year to do this!” The whole room felt gloom right after that. “We are dismissed” Seth says.

At the end of our meeting I hung up my lab coat and grabbed my purse. Someone touched my shoulder, as I was beginning to leave. I turned around and it was Seth.

“I hope your date will go well this evening.” He said.

“I am sure it will. We have reservations at the Roosevelt Restaurant” I said.

Seth said. “I knew you two would hit it off, plus a huge advantage of him working at the power plant.”

“You are right about that.” I smiled at Seth. “He works at the power plant which is perfect for our hybrids, considering they are sensitive to light, also he’s wealthy.”

Seth nodded his head, “Victoria we have a week to get this completed, I advise you to make great progress in your assignment before time runs out.”

“Yes sir. “ I said. And we both went our separate ways. As I was driving home I got a call from Paul. I answered the phone.

           “Hello?”

“Hey beautiful…” Paul said. “I couldn’t stop thinking of you, in fact, ever sense we met I couldn’t get you off my mind.”

I giggled into the phone, “Same.” I said “How was your day?”

“It was great it will be even better when we go on our date.” He says.

“I agree.” I said. “I just can’t believe you aren’t sick of me yet. We met 3 weeks ago and you’re still putting up with all my shenanigans.”

Paul laughs, “You are wonderful, don’t be so hard on yourself.” He says “So what did you do today?”

I pulled into my drive way, “Oh, I just got back from my meeting.”

“How did that go?” Paul asked.

“Well, were all behind on our assignment.” I sighed into the phone “We have a week to get it done and I feel like this week is almost over.”

“Well, It just started it is Monday.” He said.

“I get that, but No one completed anything really.”

“Sounds exhausting, time is diffidently ticking. Maybe your boss needs to hire more motivated people?” Paul asked.

“Yeah… Maybe” I said and tried to cut the conversation short so no more questions could be asked. “Well, I just made it home. I am going to head in the house and start getting ready for our date.”

“I can’t wait.” He said. We hung up the phones and I went into the house. I started off with a hot bubble bath. When I was done I found my most, sharpest outfit. It was a short, thin, sleek black and red dress. I put on my pearl necklace and curled my hair. When I was done, I put on my make-up. Then I threw on my red high heels and checked myself in the mirror. I felt fabulous. My long black curly hair and thin body helped me feel great about myself. There was no way this guy could resist me, I thought to myself.

I looked at the clock and still had an hour left before I had to leave. I decided to text Jody and Cayden to see how their luck was going.

“Hey Jody, any luck on owls or bats, yet?”

Jody responded back, “No, the struggle is real right now.”

“Well you are more than welcome to come use my 12 acres of woods. I see owls back there from time to time.”

“Really…” Jody says “I appreciate that; “I will probably be over sometime tonight.”

“Awesome, I will be on my date. So I won’t be here.” I said.

“Good luck with the date. We really need it.” My next text was with Cayden.

“How is the bat search coming along?”

It took him a few moments but he responded, “It should be good, I am about to head up to this cave that is about an hour away from us. It’s full of bats.” He responded.

“Good, Good.” I put my phone down. Time was going slower than usual. I started to pace back and forth thinking about how our whole group needed luck right now. We are running out of time, Bazul knows how much we need this luck. I decided to take my binoculars and search my woods for any owls, I could see. I didn’t find anything. Maybe Jody will have better luck then me. I said to myself.

I sat around waiting for the clock to strike 3. I was so ready to be on this date. It couldn’t come any sooner, but I don’t think waiting like this is helping time go any faster. But this was all my mind could think about. This date must go well or we would be screwed the 17th. Our plan wouldn’t go accordingly if I can’t get Paul to agree. It’s been our 5th date and I was considering of inviting him back to my house for a few more drinks after dinner. To make time go fast, I just began fiddling with my phone. It was finally 3.

I headed out to my car and headed to the restaurant. When I got there, I grabbed my phone to text Paul. I heard a knock on my window and it startled me.

“Hey” he said with a muffled voice.

I smiled when I realized it was him. I got out the car and he handed me flowers.

“These are for you.” He said.

“Awe, those are so sweet.” It was a dozen roses with four sunflowers spread in the bundle. “I adore them.”

They are perfect for a beautiful lady.”

I smiled, “So are you ready to begin our 5th date?”

“Absolutely…after you.” He said. We entered the restaurant and stood behind a couple who were about to be seated.

           “Buler” he said.

“The waiter said, “Buler, party of two.” She grabbed some silverware and took us to our seats. “Right this way.” She asked what we wanted to drink, Paul ordered dry champagne and I ordered an ice tea, with lemon.

“Your waiter will be right with you.”

           “Thank you” we both said.

“So, after dinner I was wondering if you wanted to come over to my house.” I asked Paul.

“I thought you would never ask.” He said with a grin. When we finished up our dinner, he followed me back to my house. When we entered my house, I asked him if he wanted another alcohol beverage.

“Most certainly” He said. Paul drank one drink after another. He was feeling pretty good on his 7th drink. “I must confess to you Victoria, I would do anything for you my darling.”

           “Anything…” I asked.

Paul says, “You name it, I’ll do it.”

“Well…” I said hesitantly “Nah, never mind.”

Paul couldn’t resist. He wanted to know what I was going to ask for. “No, No…” He dropped to his knees. “Finish what you were going to say.” He grabbed my face gently and stared directly into my eyes.

I sighed deeply, “Well, it’s a pretty bizarre question…I was just wondering if you would be able to shut down all the power in the city?”

It took a second to calculate what I had just asked him, he got off of his knees and sat back down on the couch and began to laugh. I watched as he took a sip of his champagne.

“Out of anything you could ask for, you ask for that?”

I stared at him attentively, “I know it sounds bonkers, but that would mean the world to me.” I said.

He looked out into the distance and thought for a quick moment, “I mean…if that’s what you want, I am sure that wouldn’t be a problem.”

My eyes got big, “For real?” I asked.

“Sure, sure why not. I mean yeah. It can be done, after all I work at a power plant.” He took another sip from his champagne glass. That was almost too good to be true, I thought to myself. The rest of the night flew by and before you know it the sun was peaking into my window. He was late for work and as he was quickly getting ready, I re assured myself that he can grant my wish for me.

“So about last night, I just wanted to say I greatly appreciate what you agreed upon.”

He kissed me on the cheeks, “Yeah, no sweat darling.” And he quickly left, off to work. I got ready for my meet up with my group. Seth began to pray,

“All rise up to the sky.” We all stood up from our chairs. “Bow down to your one true Queen Bazul. Let us praise her for granting our most desires to us. Every one began to praise then there was a moment of silence and then our eyes were glued back on Seth,

“I hope everyone’s night was good. Did anyone get lucky in their assignments?” Seth asked.

Cayden raised his hand, “I went to the Cobble Cave, it is about an hour away from us. These caves are known to be full of bats and they were! I was able to catch 16 bats!”

“Brilliant!” Seth said. “You thought outside of the box and went out of your way for Bazul…She will be very proud and grant you even greater wishes.” Cayden sat down with a huge grin across his face. You could tell he was very proud of his accomplishment. We all clapped loudly for joy, praising him and praising Bazul.

“Anyone else, have any accomplishments to share?” Seth asked. Jody stood up from her seat and says with a bit of a stutter, “W…With the help of Victoria, for letting me use her acre of woods, I..I was able to catch 4 Owls last night.”

“Great! This is what I like to hear!” Seth said. “Speaking of Victoria how was your date last night?”

I stood up proudly and said “We are in. He agreed he will do it!”

           “Was he sober?” Seth questioned.

“W...Well, not exactly, but he meant it.” I said with uncertainty in my voice.

“How do you know?” Cayden called out.

“Because he said he would do anything for me.”

I guess we will just have to see. We should invite him the 17th to our meet up. I would say sooner, but I don’t want to risk anything and if we get caught, we will have deep consequences. We must do all of our assignments in private because it isn’t popular with society.”

“Sounds, great...” I said frantically. I know longer had the confidence I once had. I was very concerned. The ride home, all I could think about was how he could easily change his mind. This was the ultimate test for me to see if he would do anything for me. I thought to myself.

I texted Paul, “Do you remember much from last night?”

He replied back, “No sorry a lot of it was a blur…Why did I do something wrong?”

“No, No you did everything great.” I texted back to him and then I thought to myself, September 17th has got to be perfect.” Would you want to spend the night the 15th to 17th?”

“Yes!”He seemed excited. The 15th was tomorrow. I had to prepare for him to have the best nights of his life. I was able to skip out on the rest of the meet ups leading to the 17th because my job was to get Paul to black out the whole city, and I had to do whatever it takes, to get this done by the 17th. It was every ones else’s job to prepare for the rest. The next few days came by quickly.

“The past few days were the best, wildest, moments of my life. I just don’t want to see it end.” Paul said.

I’d admit, I became a bit frisky with him and he liked it a bit too much, but this was for our God. And I must please Our Queen Bazul to give her exactly what she wants. I must obey to her every command or she will not be pleased and punishments will be made. They are deep, ugly punishments.”

“Paul, it doesn’t have to come to an end, Will you come with me to my meet up today?”

“Really?” he said as if he was a lost puppy ready to jump to all of my commands.

He must have been a very lonely man, to have done everything I asked him to do over the weekend. I have no doubt in my mind; he would let me down tonight. It the day of the meet up, it was the phase of the new moon, the hybrids were born and ready to be leash out into our city, so far everything was accordingly, and if our plan continues to go smooth our hybrids will spread throughout the world.

“We all took our seats in our shrine.”

           “Welcome!” Seth says allowed,

Paul whispers, “Hey I know that guy, he use to work at the plant with us.”

“Oh, what a small world it is.” I said to him.

Ladies and Gentleman, Tonight I present to you, our Hybrids. He lifted up the curtain and there were over 3,000 hybrids. I was amazed how they all done this with-in the time frame they got this done. Paul seemed grossed out,

“Those are some gruesome looking creatures. What kind of scientist did you say you were again?” I ignored the question and couldn’t stop looking at their beautiful creation. They had the face of an owl, body of an owl and bat wings. The only difference was it was bare. No feathers were on this creature. It was a beauty in our eyes, but not Paul’s.

           “This isn’t natural.”

“Please just hear us out Paul.” I took his hand and placed it in mine. “This could benefit us all, and eventually will benefit you; we just need you to turn the whole power out across the whole city by 11:59 pm tonight. We are going to leash them out into the city.

“T...This is what why you wanted me to turn off the power?”

“Yes, Paul. Queen Bazul called upon you because you are one of the chosen ones.”

“Chosen?” he said “That just sounds absolutely insane.”

“You said you would do anything for me.” I said with distraught in my voice.

“Victoria, No offense, but this seems like a cult thing to do.” He looked stressed, “Do you realize I am risking my job for this?”

“This is NOT a cult!” Jody said chiming in. This is a well known practice religion so are you in or are you out?”

Paul was backed in a corner at this point. He looked into Victoria’s sad blue eyes and he couldn’t resist. “I am in.” he said. The rest of the night we filled in Paul about Queen Bazul.

“She is the queen of Souls. By midnight when the clock strikes 11:59, we must chant the prayer to awaken her. The power all over must be turned off, our hybrids will then be leashed out into the city to take as many souls as they could. That will help strengthen her power and she will be able to eventually rule the world, and do what she does best! Take care of all of us as long as we take care of every aspect of her needs. I can’t help this to be one of them.

“It is time. You must head to your plant soon.” I caress his cheek and looked into his eyes, “Please don’t let me down.”

Paul ran to his plant. I was in a panic, counting the very last moments wondering if he was going to let me down or not. The clock turned to 11:59, I looked up to the sky and there was a black out. Seth opened the gate and leashed the beast out into the night. We heard people screaming and cries taking over the night. We also heard some chilling gun shots.

“I hope they don’t kill our hybrids, Queen Bazul needs all the souls she can get to become stronger.” Seth took a moment, “We must begin phase 2.” We all went to work. We headed out quickly to Seth’s chopper and moved to the next city to start the process all over again.
