Coming of Age

If there was only one thing I could change in the world, what would it be? I could reform the ice caps, or take the high temperatures back to what it was before I was born. Maybe I could replant the rainforests of the world? What about bringing some extinct animals back to life? Stopping the garbage invasion on the world would have been great, but it has already done all the damage it can do. No, people would just ruin that all over again.

I would change the people living in this doomed world.

The people of the world today are given so many warnings about Global Warming and Climate Change every day. No one listens to those warnings though, they are all so focused on their lives, not the world that they live their lives in. Those that know what fate awaits the globe decided to wait for the rest of the world to act, which of course, never happens. Everyone that is aware of this future drawing nearer everyday is too lazy to do their part to help.

The people now fear a robot apocalypse, their minds are so muddled on technology, that they didn’t realize temperature was beginning to rise. Every second more than 60 tons of junk are getting dumped. Still, no one cares.

The people have such horrible ways… They have stopped recycling. The last warnings are fading. They have forgotten the future, they have welcomed the climate to go up by 3°C.

They are blind even when they can see. 50% of the world’s species have gone extinct, It is becoming rare to see a tree. The air is getting very deadly around here. Not one is seeing the danger that is in front of their faces, big and bold, and yet no one seems to see, even with a magnifying glass.

Bang! It has happened, big time. Mt Everest is now too dangerous to climb. It has way too many avalanches. Even just half way up the air is so bad that you could die even with an oxygen tank in minutes. Still, the people are too stubborn to move. They say someone has put a bomb at the top. Silly people.

The tidal wave has made an appearance, and caused an epoch in history. The ice caps have all melted away, sending a massive wave down the globe. Billions of people have been wiped out. Their eyes have opened too late to their mistakes. They have slept through a crisis they hadn’t seen coming because they were blinded by their own lives, their own way of living that they didn’t want destroyed. They had done it to themselves this time.

No one cares anymore for the world, or for themselves anymore they know it is too late. That still gives them no excuse to continue dumping garbage where they please.

I have been born into a world of disaster, death and hopelessness.

My parents are both dead, no one can live over 40 years old nowadays, the climate has risen beyond what a human body can take. Many animals are extinct now. Only a few species remain. I wonder how long it will take until heat overruns this world?

Today…

Today I am going to the beach, or what remains of it anyhow. I am a tour guide that shows people the damage our ancestors have done to this once beautiful world. All it is now is a thick muddy sludge. No fish, no sand, no life saving seaweed.

Seaweed could have saved us all. It provides the world with oxygen, and it can serve as food. If we had planted seaweed everywhere on earth we would be doing so much better than we are now. Seaweed also takes carbon from the air, holding back Global Warming.

If I am really lucky, I might see one of those three things that provide the air that keeps the world alive. However, nothing we do can stop what has happened already and bring back our past. There is no way we can possibly push the pause button in history, or push an undo button that will bring back the past where we’d once thrived. That chance came years ago, but our ancestors did nothing.

For the world to thrive again like before, we’ll need everyones help. So, I’ll ask you this;

Are you all in?

I, Alssya Stewart have been doomed to face the consequences of the world before me, but I am different from the others… I have a power no one else possesses.

I have hope.

Hope that, despite our circumstances, light can outshine the darkness and bring our world back to its former glory.

Time to get back to changing the people of this world. They still don’t care about what has happened, most think this is how the world always started. They don’t know what an elephant is, for they have never seen one. How is it that they would not help?

So, I have this vision. A vision that, if, once complete, could reunite us with hope, joy and peace. And clean air.

‘Trees swayed, the snowy mountain cliffs were a faded array of sorrow. The wind howled, the rocks stood and walked. The people gazed in awe, the lemons dropped and the animals kneeled. The world stopped spinning. There was water everywhere. Ashes charred the streets. The birds chirped a different tune. Sorrow was overcome, and joy filled the air. Happiness existed, and the people were alive. Nolonger did the fate once known exist, the fog cleared and the mist revealed new chances, opportunities. The flowers bloomed, worms felt light, fish; the sun. Winter was over, Summer had begun. Waves lapped the rocky shores and the moon bore happiness for years to come. Doubt was cleared. A big light, joy, hope, brilliance. A symbol of peace. The Vision.’

I love that there is still hope at the end of the story, I hope that is true in the real world.

Hi Arwen! This was an excellent story. I think you shine a bright light on the disaster we now face in this world. I think it's a very important topic and one that everyone should take notice and do their own part to help. As usual your descriptive writing is amazing and I love the vision at the end and how you tied it into the title of this story! Very well done!! :)

Thanks for the lovely words! I'd actually written the last part, the actual vision, before the prompt come out. :)
