"Finish my drink, would you?" he said as he settled in for the night. He could tolerate his alcohol very well, but not after a meal. I made sure my man had the best meal, against his wishes, just to see him satiated. He is not the most expressive, but he certainly is a good man. Sometimes I just see myself looking at him, wondering how I got so lucky. "What are you doing?" he bellows, as he walks towards me, bringing me swiftly back to reality. I cannot help but smile, as this rugged and handsome man holds me close to him. It then struck me that we had that last 11 minutes of the movie to complete! It was well past 1 am, and I was terribly sleepy. I gently rest my head on his mighty shoulders as he wraps his arms around me to keep me warm. The red t-shirt dress was doing nothing for my warmth, so I curled up close for his warmth. His musky cologne normally riles me up in way one cannot imagine, but today it just made me feel comfortable and secure. Before I knew it, I closed my eyes, and wandered off into dreamland. I kept waking intermittently, but just could not stay awake for long. He intently noted this but did nothing about it. He just kept running his fingers gently over my arms. When I could take no longer, I tilted my head up, and nudged his strong jaw with my nose. He just looked into my eyes, and I was immediately filled with love and excitement. Not everyone is lucky enough to have the man of your dreams holding on you to with such passion. He ran his hands through my brown curly hair and drew me in for a kiss. At that moment, he took my breath away. I was not the first time he kissed me, but it felt like it was every time he did. My fatigue just vanished into thin air, as we deepened our connection. He lifted me off the couch in one swift move and carried me to the bedroom as now I had myself wrapped around him tightly. If anyone could undo me, it was this man right here. The experience was heavenly, as it always was. It was at that moment, when I placed my hands and cupped his beautiful face, that I realised I was in love. Once we were done for the night, I slipped into deep slumber. I must have woken up after half an hour, only to find myself alone. I woke up with a jolt, and frantically searched for him. I let out a sigh as I watched him from afar, sitting with a cigarette in his hand on the balcony, with a pensive look on his face. I walked towards him, ran my hair through his hair, but he would not budge. I realised over the last 3 years that there are times that he needs his alone time, and I walked away. I lay waiting in bed for him, and soon enough, he joined me. He made sure I was tucked in well in the blanket, and he lay down next to me, bare-chested. I ran my fingers over his chest in circles, and just felt his breath on my head. It seemed like eternity that we just lay together in silence. At some point in time, he slept, a let out a wonderful snore. I giggled and moved away to let him sleep in silence. Suddenly, I felt his arms around me, drawing me in. I was wrong, he was still awake, and piercing his beautiful brown eyes into me, into my soul. " Are you okay baby?" I enquired, as his seriousness began to worry me. He was quiet for a long time, and I could hear my heart pounding rapidly in my chest. "What is it?" I demanded with a trembling voice. After a long wait, he let out a sign and whispered, " Marry Me"! It was so soft, that I barely heard it. He repeated himself " Marry Me", as he tightened his grip on me. Suddenly, I felt a rush of emotions, and tears started flowing down my blushed cheeks. This worried him terribly, and he began to console me. I hugged him, for what seemed like eternity, went close to his ear, and said, "Yes baby, I am yours forever"! I was overwhelmed by the proposal, from a man who guarded his emotions. The smile on his face after agreed was priceless. He held me in embrace for the rest of the night, as we lay in silence. I nudged him gently in his chest, and he wriggled. His heart was now beating with mine as one. He then had a cheeky smile on his face, as he enquired “this is not the booze talking right? I wouldn’t want to get up tomorrow with you having no recollection of this proposal”. I said, “Maybe I’ll forget, maybe not, we’ll find out tomorrow”. He tapped me hard on my head as I burst into laughter. I gave him a long kiss “I will never forget this baby, not tonight, not ever”. He heaved a sigh of relief, and then hugged me. Soon, we fell asleep together, for the first time, in commitment. Nothing in our future was certain, nothing was discussed or deliberated at this point. However, I was sure of one thing, my life would no longer be the same. For a girl who felt unloved her whole life, she finds the man like herself, smothering her with unsurmountable love. The proposal may not have been one for the romance novels, with roses and music, or grand gestures and firecrackers. Nonetheless, it was the perfect proposal, and it was mine to cherish for the rest of my life. Come next morning, he wakes me up and teases me, “do you remember what happened last night?”. “Were we robbed?” I reply in my sleepy daze! He looks at me funny, as I bolt open my eye and stare at him. Before long, I was giggling, and I assured him that I remember every second of his short, spontaneous yet beautiful proposal. “Big mistake my friend, you are now stuck with me for life!” I exclaimed as I sat next to him. He just soaked in my crazy morning beauty and said “Gladly”. That’s all the love I ever needed for him. My man
