Fantasy Teens & Young Adult

I sit in the back of the class, the back of the bus, even the back of the car. I mostly blend into the background. My parents forget I am around sometimes. Overlooked by teachers. Bus driver missed my stop and here I am again, the last one on the bus, yet again, the bus driver just closed the door. Alone, as always.

I walked home alone. Most days I watch everyone running around living their lives. I see most things, if not everything. Today is like any other day, except this boy, he is new. I have never seen him before. And I see it all. I quietly watch him from my front porch. He is of short stature, dark brown hair, ears that look just a bit too small for his head. I notice his arms match his stature, like a baby tyrannosaurus rex. Ripped jeans, camouflage crocs, and a plain white tee-shirt. He is carrying boxes inside. One box says. Bathroom. Another, kitchen. Kenny’s room. That must be his name Kenny. I like it. Must be short for Kenneth, haha. Funny.

I do not know how long I had been staring until I heard, “Hey, im kenny. You must be my neighbor?”

I struggled to find my voice,”Ye-Yeah, I am Hannah. Your neighbor.” I half laughed.

“Nice to meet you, my mom told me someone around my age lives next door, “

I smiled.”Uh yea, so i have to go inside it was nice meeting you”

“You as well. Hey one last thing, do you go to the local highschool? I'm supposed to be on the bus in the morning, but I don't know my way around the school?”

“Yeah i can show you around”

I walked inside and I felt myself smiling from ear to ear, the heat of blushing rush to my cheeks. He noticed me.

I woke up around five thirty the next morning to get ready, it was a wednesday. I decided to dress pretty today, put makeup on. Dark wet colored jeans. A graphic tee shirt. And some white vans, I even did my makeup with a simple wing, some blush glittery gold eyeshadow and some clear gloss.

I noticed his first, it was blue with white stripes or white with blue stripes. Aeropostale. Some light blue shorts. And the same camoflaudge crocs. With black socks. Its now about six fifteen the bus will be here any minute.

We get on, “Oh two new students today.” the bus driver chuckled as we sat down. The drive to school is quiet. We have a couple more stops until we get to the school.

I ask about his schedule. He's in the same first class as me. We have the same lunch along with the same last class as well.

I showed him around and joked with him, “Tomorrow you're on your own” i smiled

“Oh i am a quick learner he smirks”

It was not before long when he began to ignore me at school. And on the bus, I was invisible to him as well, overlooked. Blending into the background.

So I did what I was best at, I watched. And learned.

It had been a few weeks and he was in his backyard. There was a gazebo in the far back left side of the yard, i thought to myself that it would look better in the center of the yard with some flowers around it and a koi pond in the back left.

The next day he was still working in the backyard, only something was different, and I couldn't figure it out at first. I stared as he laid some fresh grass down as his mom planted flowers around the gazebo. I noticed there was a koi pond now, that's strange it was moved. The gazebo was now in the center. How? How did they know? Maybe it is just a coincidence.

As I thought how strange it was, his mom looked up at me from my window and just smiled and waved at me, like she knew what I was thinking.

I wanted to figure out how they knew about what I thought, or how they moved it within twenty four hours by themselves.

I snuck over there using the only thing I was blessed with, blending in so well. It's like I am almost invisible.   Kenny walks right by me as I'm standing next to his white fence, like he couldn't see me. I imagined the inside of his house would be neat and put together well.

I peek through the back doors, they were spotless, shiny, sliding glass doors. His mom was washing her hands of soil, I smell lavender, mixed with honey and lemon. It smells so welcoming.

I look around a few minutes and hear her start giggling to herself, “Hannah, just because I can not see you does not mean I can not hear you. Or your thoughts”

She can hear thoughts? I think to myself

“Of course, you my dear are special as well which is how you are well, invisible. Its a shame you have not realized it own your own yet”

At that moment I turned to look into this beautiful oval mirror with silver around it. I don't see myself. I begin to breathe heavily, and my chest starts to hurt, my throat closing. I am having a panic attack.

“It is okay sweetheart, it's normal to react this way. That's why they sent me.”

They, who are they? I smelt it again with lemon, honey. Lavender and like that i was unconscious.

When I woke up it was dark, I was in bed. Not my own, this one was comfortable, soft pillows, silky pink curtains on the window, dark blue throw rug. A beautiful white sofa in the corner, and they were sitting there watching me.

“Good you are awake, lets talk.” She seemed calm, and talked softly.”First thing is first, my name is Cami, I work for this agency that helps special people learn and control their gifts. Like yours. Some people are born with it, some are created,” she glanced at Kenny who never took his eyes off of me, and did not have a care when she was speaking. “Though the people above me made it possible for you to come with us, and not worry certain people, do you get that?”

“What do you mean?”

“The boss above me, my husband, can make memories come or go. Erase a whole person from existence.”

I guess that makes sense but why me? “Why me, I'm not special?”

“Oh dear, but haven't you ever wondered why people seem to look through you, and not see you?”

I guess it makes sense. I wanted to ask what makes Kenny so special, but I didn't.

“He has super strength,” that's how we moved the gazebo and put a koi pond in so fast.”

It has been a couple years since I discovered this ability about myself, I began dating Kenny. I check in on my parents once and a while, but I have not in months. They have another kid, and just like me, she's special. That's another thing I now see a gold glow from people who have these amazing abilities.  And soon, she's coming home to her new family, where she belongs.
