Mystery

Roughly over a month had passed before Katie found out the secret that many, but more specifically Vanessa had been keeping from her. Vanessa, one of Katie’s closest friends, had started “talking” to her ex-boyfriend, Jason.

It was an ordinary school day just like any other which led to a regular Monday evening until Vanessa went on her Snapchat and saw something she never saw coming. Her still at the time friend Katie had gone on her private story (a story created by a person in which they choose who is able to watch it) talking about a very touchy and interesting topic, that being friends dating their friends exes. When Vanessa first heard this she was a bit confused, but within a matter of seconds it clicked, Katie somehow found out she was “talking” to Jason. Vanessa was shocked as to how Katie could’ve found out as Vanessa intended to tell Katie all about it.

Some of Vanessa and Katie’s mutual friends knew that Vanessa was “talking” to Jason, but they kept that to themselves especially since Vanessa was a better friend to them than Katie was so they never told Katie. Vanessa and these friends all listened to what Katie had to say about her thoughts on friends dating their friends exes and it was not good. Katie seemed very angry and it was clear that the way she was speaking on the situation seemed personal, as if it was aimed at someone. Katie said harsh things, she said things such as, if anyone ever did that to her from then on that person would be dead to her, that anyone who does that is not a “real” friend because a “real” friend doesn’t do that, that karma would come back around and make them pay for what they did, etc.

Vanessa and her friends were then convinced Katie knew; however they were stunned by the things Katie. To them the things she said were way over the line and just things no one should ever say, no matter how angry they may be. After hearing what Katie had to say Vanessa and her friends got on the phone to share their thoughts on what Katie had to say. They realized that their friendships and friend group would never be the same, but they were all ready for it. They all agreed no matter how things were handled they would remain friends because they were one anothers best friends and would defend one another no matter what.

The next day at school everyone who knew about the situation was on edge wondering if Katie was going to talk about or bring up the situation. Katie wasn’t heard of or seen all morning, that was until fourth period. Katie went on to Twitter and made a very shady tweet saying “It be the ones closest to you.” Now Vanessa did not have a Twitter but her close friend Sam did and Sam showed her the tweet asking if she knew what it was about. The funny thing was although Vanessa had never told Sam about her and Jason “talking” she knew that Sam had figured it out, she just never asked Vanessa about it.

Vanessa was upset by the tweet Katie made because if Katie was really that hurt or upset about the situation why wouldn’t she personally approach Vanessa to talk about it maturly. Anyways, Vanessa quickly told Sam what was going on and Sam was not the least bit surprised as she told Vanessa she saw this coming because she sensed that Vanessa and Jason had feelings for one another months ago. By this time, the fourth period was nearly over and Vanessa and Sam started making their way to fifth period, that being dance class, in which both Jason and Katie were in, as well.

From the moment all the girls were together one could feel the tension as most of the girls knew what was happening because by now Katie had told so many people about the situation. Vanessa on the contrary acted as if nothing had happened and went about the period as usual. Not only did she not want to blow things out of  proportion, but she is not one to react since a lot of the times what others look for is for some sort of reaction to make oneself look bad. After class, Vanessa told Jason that Katie found out about them although it was still unknown how. At the end of the day, neither Vanessa or Katie talked to one another as Vanessa would not try to have a conversation with someone she knew wouldn’t listen and Katie simply avoided Vanessa.

Later that day, Sam called Vanessa to talk to her about everything that was going on. Sam would tell Vanessa that she had talked to Katie and Katie seemed very hurt by the situation which Vanessa understood why she felt that way. After a long phone call Sam convinced Vanessa to reach out to Katie, specifically by text as she felt that was the best approach at the moment. Later that night, Vanessa made the decision to text Katie apologizing for what had happened because at the end of the day she was sorry, not exactly for what had happened but more the way Katie found out because Vanessa never intended for her to find out from someone else.

It was the next day, in their second period which Sam and Vanessa not only have together, but sit in the same group. Vanessa told Sam she took her advice, put her pride aside and reached out to Katie; however, Katie never even opened the message. Sam was shocked to hear this since to her it appeared that Katie wanted to talk to Vanessa about what had happened. Vanessa told Sam that she was done which Sam understood because she knew how much pride Vanessa had to put aside to apologize and for Katie to not even open the message was ridiculous. At this point Vanessa didn’t care anymore because not only was her message not opened, but she knew that not only had her name been in others' mouths but her friends and Vanessa would not take that disrespect.

It was the last day of that week, lunch time, when Katie came over to Vanessa. She tapped on her shoulder and said “We need to talk,” Vanessa would then stand up and say “Alright then, let’s go talk.” The two girls walked a few feet away from their table and began to have a conversation about the situation. It was awkward at first as both girls seemed to have a reason to be upset with one another. At first they just looked at one another waiting for the other to speak, Vanessa then asked Katie who she thought should speak first which Katie would respond with “I think you should go first.” Vanessa spoke first and the conversation just went back-and-forth between the two, the conversation didn’t lead anywhere.

Vanessa told Katie what she needed to say, she said she was sorry not only for what had happened, but the way in which she found out. Katie wanted answers, she asked Vanessa since when, how it happened, who knew, etc. Vanessa answered all every one of her questions with honesty, but one. When Katie asked who knew Vanessa told her she never told anyone, which of course was a lie, but Vanessa was not going to make their problem bigger than them two like Katie had.

The two girls never spoke again, their friendship was done and over with. To this day, Katie has not gotten over what happened. Vanessa on the other hand never let it get to her. Vanessa and Jason continued “talking” and are now happily in a relationship. The friendship was lost but not all friendships last forever, especially when respect comes in the way.
