Inspirational Teens & Young Adult Fiction

Answer was on the verge of achieving her lifelong dream of being a celebrity make-up artist, this was the closest she’d ever been. After braving four years in university studying accounting after what seems like forever hiding her passion from her friends and her parents, she was gonna win by all means necessary. She thought she had sacrificed way too much for her to not end up in the finals.

Answer was the last child of four girls and when her mother was pregnant with last, she hoped that it would be a boy this time but when she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, it seemed like she had gotten her answer.  She believed it was clear that all her answers would come from these four girls and that she was meant to have girls and so she called her little girl Answer.

Answer grew up to be a true gift to her parents. Although her sisters grew to be successful in their own right. Answer stood out, Collecting all the awards at school and having the most beautiful heart to all those around her. A true pride and joy to her parents.

Everyone was convinced she lived the most perfect life - everyone but her best friend whom she confided in about almost everything. Her best friend who she only saw on school grounds.

To Answer’s parents, school was a priority and anything else a distraction. Not only that but her parents were respectable members of the community. Answer Grew up in a town where apart from everyone knowing your business there is only so much to choose from to do for the rest of your life. Her mother was a teacher and her dad an engineer. The only other thing she could do or be was a doctor, a nurse or a clerk and her chosen destiny was to be a doctor.

Everything went according to plan until she got to high school.

There was a trend going on where all the girls wore make up to school just to upset all the teachers. When Answer showed up to school plain faced, all the guys made fun of her, saying she could do everything but be an actual girl. Always quick on her tongue she snapped back but it did hurt her that she couldn’t do what all the other girls were doing. Even when it was just for fun.

So when she got home she went into her old sisters room and started playing around with make up and very quickly realised that she had a knack for it.

She could never leave the house with the make up on but every time she got the chance she locked yourself in her sisters room and played around with her make up, creating all kinds of artistic logs. One time she drew a zip over both her eyes, making it look like the only way you could open her eyes was to unzip them. She would then use some eyeshadow just to colour her eyes.

But this would only be a hobby because what she was meant to do was be a doctor 1 day and the only people that knew was her and her best friend.

Answer and her best friend went to the same university as they had always planned. Her friend studying graphic design and her, medicine.

This was also the first time she could experience freedom outside of her small town and at some points considered changing courses from medicine to architecture or even something in the arts department.

Now that she was able to go to all the fancy parties, courtesy of her best friend, she could experimental with all kinds of make up looks and and almost every time people would ask her wish she had gotten her face done and how much it was, when she told them it was her own work Sam would insist that she needed to change from medicine to fully pursuing being an artist. This was something she always thought about and this felt like her own answer. Through peoples recommendations she joined several competitions, one of which her parents found out about and were not very pleased about her seemingly throwing her life away.

One competition in particular app promised paid tuition to a local beauty school and an internship upon graduation wish you would get the opportunity to work with well-known people.

To all those were familiar with her work, this was an easy win and Answer would finally get to do what she was meant to do. This was until she saw some of the other contestants work. In particular, one of the contestants who had apparently dropped out in the finals the previous here due to some personal reasons.

At this point answer was grateful she didn’t already dropped out from pursuing her medicine degree. Just like her parents keep telling her this would just be a hobby.

A week before the finals, Answer had been out with her friends when she spotted one of the contestants she would be competing against, with one of the judges and they seemed very cosy. When she prompted her friends to confirm what she was seeing. They suggested she takes pictures to show to the board in charge of the competition. Not only that but also blackmail the judge to give her some of the conceptual prompts that the contestants would have to follow and be judged on, so Answer could prepare well in advance and wow the judges.

Although tempting, answer passed on the opportunity. Her friends however took the pictures just for insurance.

On the day of the competition just before Answer and her opposition took to their stands, her opponent made a comment about how she at least had being a doctor to fall back on and that upset Answer. But even then she didn’t say anything. It was only when just after the first round, her sister popped up backstage to wish her luck and mentioned that her parents thought this was just a phase and nothing would come of it, that she really started to get upset. There was only one round left and that round was a freestyle round where the make up artist could now design any look they wanted, this was different from the previous year, where the judges would still give the contestants a brief of what to do.

Answer thrived in creating groundbreaking looks and she went in this round and created her best look yet which was how she won the competition and eventually dropped out of school to pursue her own passion.

Her parents were disappointed but she, for the first time in her life, was doing something that made her happy.

She reflected on how she probably would have had questions on whether she deserved it had she blackmailed anyone. But this was her win. One she earned.
