Are you excited? His voice rang out inside Kara’s head.

Excited for what? Kara questioned absentmindedly still working on her art coursework.

Excited that we’ll finally get to see each other tomorrow! We’ll finally be able to meet tomorrow now that you’ll be 18! It’s in the official soulmate handbook that when both parties in a soulmate bond turn 18, they will be able to meet each other in person and know the names and appearances of each other.

Ah. That. The bond that she had with a complete stranger just because the universe decided that they were meant to be. What a whole load of bollocks. As much as her soulmate seemed nice, Kara was already in love with someone and had no intention of giving up on that any time soon.

Hellooooo, are you there? Her soulmate’s voice floated straight through her mind and interrupted her pessimistic thoughts.

I’m here. And yeah, I guess I’m excited. What a lie.

… You know I can hear that right?

Fuck. Sorry, I’m just irritated doing this coursework.

Yeah, okay, whatever. I’ll talk to you later.

Making sure Kara put up her mental block, she sighed in relief. It’s not that she hated her soulmate or thought he was a bad person. She just didn’t want him because her soulmate just wasn’t the guy she was in love with. There’s no way she would be so lucky like that.

Her thoughts were interrupted once again but this time from the ping of her phone.

‘I don’t think my soulmate likes me very much beetle.’

Kara scowled at the nickname and the message (but more so the nickname than the message.)

‘Why do you think that?

And how many times have I told you? Stop. Calling. Me. Beetle! I’m not a bloody Volkswagen or an insect! >:(‘

She quickly texted back her best friend Jaime. Whoever his soulmate was, they were an idiot if they disliked Jaime. His whole personality was like a golden retriever. He was goofy, sunny, happy, and just overall a wonderful person. The type of person no one could hate even if they tried their hardest!

‘I’m pretty sure they don’t like me from the way they respond. There’s no energy and they lied about being excited to meet me tomorrow. So yeah.

And no matter how many times you tell me, I’ll still call you beetle, beetle. ;)’

Kara immediately felt guilty about his text. She had reacted in a similar way to her soulmate’s question and didn’t even bother to think about how it would make him feel. Whatever, she’ll just apologise tomorrow in person then.

‘I’m sure it’s fine. They’re probably just scared to meet you and are nervous because they think that you might not like them? Don’t worry too much about it, strawberry jam (yes that’s your new name - it matches your hair don’t you think? >:)’

‘Hmm that makes sense, I guess. Okay well, I’ll talk to you in the morning beetle. I’m quite tired now so goodnight. Try and go to bed before 5 am please x

And I love the new name beetle (and please my hair is a dirty blond not strawberry blond)’

‘Sure jam-jam. And okay haha I’ll, sleep well. We’ll talk tomorrow x’

A deep sigh left her body, the slow feeling of jealousy creeping up her spine. Why couldn’t he be hers to keep. Why did he need to have someone else? If she were to confess her love to him now, then it would most definitely ruin their friendship. Kara couldn’t bear to think about her messed-up feelings any longer and finally, after procrastinating until 4 am, she went to bed.

It was around 3 pm when she woke up again feeling just as groggy as ever. Trudging her way into the bathroom she leaned against the counter and glanced at her face. It took her a good few seconds to process the face in the mirror - AHHHHHHHH! The surprise of seeing a male face in the mirror was enough to knock her off balance and fall backward into the towel rack.

She was a boy. A. Boy. As in a dude, a dude with a dangly thing between her legs and zero fat on her chest. Hauling herself back up against the counter, she took the time to really look at her soulmate’s face.

Oh. Oh god was she stupid. She, well now he, rushed to finish up in the bathroom (feeling a little bit weird about using someone else’s toothbrush to clean her teeth, even though they weren’t really her teeth technically) and run out of the house towards the place she called home.

Kara had never run that fast in her life and if this were her body, she would be panting by now, but her soulmate was fit as hell, both literally and figuratively. She ran onto the porch of her house, grabbed the spare key under the gnome, and unlocked the front door.

“Hello? Is anyone home?” The deep smoothness of her soulmate’s voice rang through the empty house, and she got chills all over her body. God, she was getting all giddy from the sound of her soulmate’s voice. Taking the time to finally check the phone, she reads the message that would have been helpful before she left the house.

‘I’m at the place where it all began.’

It was as if her body was on autopilot, walking to the ice-cream parlour before her mind even processed what happened. She speed-walked past the park and down the high street before entering the shop.

There he was, or well she. Sitting at their table with two half-melted ice-cream cups, staring straight at her eyes. Seeing herself from his eyes, she knew. She knew that they were meant to be. Kara sat down opposite him still holding eye contact.

“Hi.” He breathed out with a light chuckle looking radiant and dreamy yet a little nervous.

“Before you say anything I know you don’t want to be soulmates and that’s okay–”

“Don’t want to be soulmates?? Jaime no. I’m so sorry I was rude to you! To tell you the truth, I didn’t want a soulmate because I was in love with you, but I had no idea how to tell you, and you always seemed so happy about having a soulmate I thought clearly at that time wasn’t me so I started being rude to my soulmate and it was all a big mess, and I felt so bad about being rude to them, well you and I want to apologise for it all–”

He cut her off with a hearty laugh and some tears in his eyes (she won’t lie it felt very weird seeing herself from his perspective). He grabbed her face with both hands and planted a long peck on her lips.

“I love you too Kara, I always have. I think you’re the most beautiful person inside and out (she knew he was telling the truth because she could see it and feel his emotions for her) and yeah, I was a little disappointed at first because I thought that my soulmate wasn’t you but now that I know it’s you, I am the happiest and the luckiest person in the world!” His smile was as bright as ever, golden retriever personality really shining through, and it made her feel amazing. They sat at the booth grinning at each other like fools and happy, although Kara was feeling a little bit stupid. But it was all okay and they were soulmates.
