Romance

It is the peak of the season, lazy hot summers lingers. The pale of the sea sweeping the waves, a million times over, as the sun sets its’ golden yellow glow, along the sandy beaches to a faraway place, a place where dreams are made and not born.

They felt lost almost in isolation, freeing themselves from the crowd, to be alone once again, before her departure. Looking out far beyond the neighbouring island along the horizons of the shore, he felt her hand touch his, longing to do more than he could, he daren’t for fear of the consequences.

The sky still remained blue in the orange lit horizon from the setting of the sun, the air warm and humid; a slight breeze could be felt. The music is playing in the far distance, with the muffled voices laughing and talking, it was one of those rare party celebrations they did every full moon.

She looked away from him towards the direction of the sea, watching as the glare of the moon shone deliberately on to the waters

BRIAN

I’m going to miss you, you do know that?

CLAIRE

It’s not the end of the world; I won’t be gone long…doesn’t the moon look beautiful from here?

BRIAN

It wouldn’t be the same without you

CLAIRE

I’m not going away for ever; we’ve spoken about this before

BRIAN

Well, it seems like I’m going to lose you, there are lot of opportunities out there where you are going…

CLAIRE

I’ll be fine; I promise I will not be tempted

BRIAN

Let’s take one last walk together in silence

CLAIRE

I couldn’t agree with you more

BRIAN

I have something I need to say to you, something which cannot wait until you get back…I need to know the answer

CLAIRE

What is it... you’ve already told me everything there is to know, what else is there?

BRIAN

I don’t know how to put it

CLAIRE

Just say whatever is on your mind

BRIAN

Let’s walk along this beach for all time sake, it will cools things down

CLAIRE

You’re putting off whatever it is you want to tell me…what is it?

BRIAN

I love you, is all I can say

CLAIRE

I know you do and I love you too

BRIAN

What are we going to do?

CLAIRE

I really think I should be setting off, I have things to do, which cannot wait

BRIAN

You can’t go yet, not yet… not just yet…please…stay with me for while.

CLAIRE

I can’t stay for too long.

BRIAN

Can I see you later?

CLAIRE

I’m not sure if I can let you do that, given the circumstances

BRIAN

I care about you…why are you leaving so soon anyway?

CLAIRE

You know why, anyway I need time to think…to clear my head…a lot of things had been said and I just don’t know what to believe, if I go now, it may become clearer… especially about us

BRIAN

I will miss you, I don’t know what I would do without you…seeing your chair empty, next to mine, it will not be the same…oh why did I agree to this?

CLAIRE

The time will go so quick before you know it I would be back here again

BRIAN

Would you just consider staying another day, for all time sake?

CLAIRE

It’ll be too risky

BRIAN

You’re the only one for me

CLAIRE

I know, it is so hard to let go

The two of them stare into each other’s eyes, he softly stroking her neck, she, moving closer towards him. The sea, rolling gently, the breeze is slight.

BRIAN

What time is your flight?

CLAIRE

I can’t remember off hand, it’s sometime in the afternoon…I don’t know if that is a good thing as I wanted to get this over done with…

BRIAN

What will happen to us?

CLAIRE

I don’t know

BRIAN

Let us walk together

They huddled together towards a shade nearby, the moonlight is still as they stand opposite each other, gazing into each other’s eyes, the passion between them, is intense, the chemistry very symbolic, and close enough to light up the whole earth and that is what happened. The earth lit up, and the atmosphere became bright, as a great beam of light shone in the middle of the sea. They were both distracted by the sudden glare.

BRIAN

I don’t believe what I am seeing, what is that?

CLAIRE

What do you think it could be?

BRIAN

I don’t know, but I don’t wish to stay too long… come on, and let us get out of here… at least out of the way from whatever that could be

CLAIRE

Where do think it came from?

BRIAN

I don’t know and I don’t think I want to know either

CLAIRE

Yes, let’s go

BRIAN

It’s been a nice walk; at least I got to spend these last few moments with you

CLAIRE

Yes, we are here, together at last, so sad that it has to end this way

BRIAN

I wish it wouldn’t end at all and you know this doesn’t have to be the end if only you would reconsider

They continued on their romantic walk along the beach, and the activity in the sea had subsided. Nothing to stop them, enjoying their last moments together, they hoped that there would be no more distractions.

BRIAN

We’ve come to the end, where shall we go now?

CLAIRE

Listen to that!

BRIAN

What is it?

CLAIRE

Don’t you hear that?

BRIAN (Puzzled at what he should be listening out for)

CLAIRE

I just love to hear that… the waves… oh how I will miss that

BRIAN

I will miss you too, even more

CLAIRE

Please, stop... I promised myself that I wouldn’t do this

BRIAN

I’d better take you home, it’s been a long night and we are both tired

CLAIRE

Thank you…let’s go now before anyone sees us, I don’t feel like talking to anyone

BRIAN

I understand, I feel the same

As they both leave the moonlit beach and head towards the jeep parked on the road side, the party in the background is in full swing, no one notices the two of them leaving and no one noticed them slip away. In the jeep, Claire, in the passenger side, Brian starts the engine on the driver side and turns towards her

BRIAN

You’re such a wonderful person and I am so thankful that you came into my life, from the first time I laid eyes on you; I knew that you were the one for me

CLAIRE

oh please don’t start this again

BRIAN

I just want to express how I really feel about you, right now before you go because I know by tomorrow I wouldn’t have a chance to be alone with you at all

CLAIRE

You make me feel so special

BRIAN

You are more than special, I’d hope you be mine, some day

CLAIRE

Hold me

BRIAN

With pleasure

CLAIRE

I guess this is our final good bye

BRIAN

Yes, I guess you’re right

As they hold each other in an embrace, interlocking together, the winds of time turn towards the shores, as the moonlight lingers and the two of them engaged in a kiss to last a life time.
