Amelia feels blessed with the friendship Nicole and her have since the beginning of the University life. Now in their last year, their bond became stronger like the true definition of family, that does not require consanguineous ties.
During a sunny Monday morning, the two walk by the campus having a conversation. Both laugh, but suddenly, form far away, Amelia’s sight catches a young man walking. Slowly her smile fades away. her gaze shifts to the front and thinks to herself:
“No… No…”
“Are you alright Amy (nickname for Amelia)?” -Says Nicole while looking at her curious.
Faking a smile, Amelia looks at her and nods her head.
Later that day, Amelia enters a class and sits down at her desk, places her books. Looking up and surprised, her eyes see the impossible. It wasn’t a mirage, it was a person, and that being was Ian Allen walking in to class. Tears invade her blue ocean eyes. Intrigued Ian looks at her, but she dodges it, stands up and leaves the class while he watches.
Two days go by, Amelia walks down the University hall with her head downcast. In opposite direction Ian walks and stops in front of her. Their eyes meet, hers with resentment, his with confusion. This last for four seconds.
“Will you explain me why the sharp look in your eyes—always?” -Ian questions.
Amelia sights in frustration.
“How dare you? Just, how dare you?” -She inquires.
“What do you mean?” -Ian adds.
“Stop pretending… Don’t speak to me ever again Ian.” -Amelia states.
She moves to le left; he blocks her and his eyes look at each other again.
“I really don’t understand Amelia. Look… I don't care if you insist on saying you don't want communication between us. No matter how angry your eyes look at me, I know that you want the same as me and, I'm already trapped in those beautiful eyes. -He exclaims.
Her gaze gains tension. Ian comes closer to her, she steps back.
“I detest you … Forget I exist.”-She answers.
Amelia walks away. Ian looks at her with a penetrating gaze. After a few seconds he starts walking with a thoughtful expression. But accidentally stumbles with someone. Looking straight ahead, he sees Nicole, who after meeting his eyes gets lost in an invisible world.
“Hi Ian.”- she greets him.
“Hi Nicole, I’m sorry. Are you alright?” -Ian asks.
“It’s okay, I am.” -Nicole replies.
“I’m sorry again…” -He adds.
While he leaves, she looks at him and smiles broadly.
In the rainy night, at the living room of Amelia’s house, she walks in and sees her mother Stella.
“Mom, is your friend coming?” -Amelia asks.
“Yes sweetheart, Alice doesn’t live far from here, so she said it was fine to come. By the way, her son is coming.”-Stella says and smiles mischievously.
Amelia looks at her intrigued.
“Okay…”- responds vaguely and turns around about to leave but the doorbell rings.
Stella walks to the door and opens it. Amazed, Stella and her friend greet each other. In blank, Amelia looks to the person next to her mom’s friend. She looks at Ian seriously. He sees her surprised. Stella and her friend notice the awkwardness, making them greet. Through the dinner Stella and Alice have a pleasant conversation while having dinner. Ian fixes his gaze on Amelia, who upon feeling him, looks into his eyes. They stay lost in each other's gaze for a long time. Amelia excuses herself and departs from the dining room.
Getting to the patio of the house, Amelia sits on a large swing, with a downcast look. Unexpectedly she looks to her left and sees Ian sitting. He keeps his gaze straight ahead.
“The night is a bit cold.” -Ian says.
She keeps silence.
“I didn’t know my mom’s friend was your mom Amelia. I am not here on purpose.” -Ian tells her.
Their eyes meet.
“Why did you come to California?”-Amelia asks him.
With a troubled sight Ian looks at the front and says to her:
“My father and brother died on a car accident years ago. I lost my memory; I still don’t remember much of my past... My mother suffered a lot…We thought maybe it was best to start a new life here.”
She looks at him stunned.
“You really don’t remember anything?” -She asks.
He looks at her eyes and says:
“I don’t.”
Amelia sees him with nostalgia. After six seconds looks down and shares part of her story by saying:
“My father also died, a year ago. I understand the pain of losing family…”
“Even if I don’t remember, I feel so much sadness seeing their photos…”- He adds.
Her eyes fill with tears.
“It was not my intention to cause you tears, I’m sorry. Your beautiful eyes should be filled with happiness.”
He touches her cheeks wiping her tears. Then he slowly brings his face closer to hers and gently kisses her lips. After a few seconds she corresponds to his kiss. Following thirty seconds they stop and look at each other’s eyes. Ian touches her cheek and says:
“You can’t deny me your feelings Amy.”
Her face bushes as an apple. He smiles, she looks at her right.
“Feels like I just kissed an apple.”-He says.
Their eyes meet again.
“I…”-Amelia speaks uncertainly.
Ian interrupts her and tells:
“I’m not willing to pretend this didn’t happen.”
Amelia, with a nervous look sees his eyes and says:
“You don’t know me Ian…”
“I can define very well what I feel about you.” -Ian replies.
“How can I be with him when I keep a secret? But, how can I not be with him when I love him so much?” -Amelia speaks deep in her thoughts.
Ian stands up with frustration on his expression, following him, she stands up with enough security in what she is going to say and tells him:
“Wait Ian…”
“Would you accept a friendship?”
Ian sees her eyes in a thoughtful way.
Days go by and so a strong, unbreakable bond emerges between Amelia and Ian. After classes, during any free moment in the day, the time would be shared by the two. On the other hand, Nicole spends her time alone, not knowing much about Amelia’s present, and wondering if something has happened to their friendship. Soon she decides to confront Amelia, but just when she is on her way to speak, she found herself seeing Amelia and Ian at the front of Amelia’s house speaking in a pleasant atmosphere. Decided, Nicole walks to them with seriousness on her expression and stops in front of them. Surprised, Amelia sees her and so Ian. They greet each other, and soon Ian decides to leave them alone. The ladies enter the house, sit at the living room and start having a conversation. Shortly, Nicole says the obvious:
“You two are becoming closer and closer Amy.”
“We are getting to know each other, he lives very close, so we decided to come together…” -Amelia replies.
“Are you guys dating?”-Nicole asks.
“No.” -Amelia replies concretely.
“I have spoken to Ian. Besides being attractive, he is a nice guy that doesn’t talk to a lot of girls. Are you sure you are not interested?”-Nicole ask persistently.
“I… I am Nicole.”-Amelia replies.
Nicole smiles and then says:
“So, would it be okay to ask him out?”
Amelia looks at her a little surprised and asks:
“Are you interested in Ian?”
“I am…But if there’s interest between you two I don’t want to interfere.”-Nicole replies.
Something shatters in Amelia’s soul and heart while looking at Nicole’s eyes.
“You—should tell him how you feel.”-Amelia states.
“You know how important your opinion is to me Amy, especially this occasion…So I will ask him!”-Nicole replies excited.
Amelia fakes a smile.
During the afternoon, Amelia spends her time trying to study at her room. But the thought of Ian keeps her from concentrating. She walks to a window and stands in front of it and looks outside. Her phone at her bed rings. She picks it up and sees a call from Ian. With tension (she) replies:
“Ian…”
“Is your mom home?”-Ian asks.
“Why are you asking that?”-She questions him.
“I don’t want to cause misunderstandings if she sees us alone.”-He answers.
She looks outside confused and says:
“What?”
Surprised she sees Ian walking to the front door. After, turns around nervous.
“Ian, what are you doing here?!”
“Will you let me in so I can tell you?”-Ian asks.
Amelia makes her way to the front. After opening it she looks at Ian with tension.
“By the look on your face I guess we are going to be alone.”- Ian tells her.
Amelia looks at her right nervous. After a few seconds, he enters and she closes the door. Amelia looks at him steadily and says:
“Actually, is good that you came, I was planning on telling you something...”
“I was planning to tell you something too, but I couldn’t wait…”-Ian replies.
“I need to be first. Listen… We can’t have a friendship; we can’t have any relationship.”-She tells him very directly.
He looks at her in shock, then says:
“Amy, no.”
“I can’t let you in…Just know I can’t, we need to stop talking.”-She tells him.
Ian walks over to her and touches her arms while looking into her eyes, then says:
“Explain me what is making you act this way.”
“It won’t make a difference in my decision...”-She answers him.
“I won’t leave this house until you tell me.”-He affirms.
“Ian, if you really care leave…”-She answers.
Ian looks at her bothered and says:
“That manipulation doesn’t work on me.”
She looks at him with eyes filled of unexplainable emotions, then says.
“Nicole confessed me that she likes you, I can’t hurt her, she’s my best friend…”
“So, you can hurt me?”-Ian asks.
She looks at him afflicted and says:
“I would never want that…”
He gets closer to her, tells:
“You know there is nothing wrong with what we feel.”
“I don’t want to hurt either of you.”-Emily tells him.
Ian grabs her hand gently and speaks:
“You need to be honest with yourself.”
Her eyes fill with tears while struggling to say a word:
“I…”
Ian kisses her lips; she reciprocates him while touching his cheek. After ten seconds he stops her to say:
“Let’s stop pretending, please Amy…It’s devouring me not being able to hug you, hold your hands, kiss you. I don’t know how, I can’t explain, but in such short amount of time I’m madly in love with you.”
She looks to her left uncomfortably, then replies him:
“It’s complicated to decide right now…”
“Then I think I should leave.”-He adds.
Ian stands up and walks to the door with tension. About to leave, his steps stop when feeling Amelia hugging him from behind.
“Don’t go…” -She speaks between tears.
Ian laces his fingers between hers.
“I love you.” -She replies.
Ian turns around, caresses her cheeks drying her tears, and says:
“I love you Amy.”
They kiss passionately. But abruptly he stops, with a confused look. Amelia looks at him in dismay.
“Ian, what’s wrong?”
With paleness he looks at her.
“I feel dizzy…”
Amelia holds Ian by his arms, they walk to the couch and sit down.
“Keep calm, I’ll bring you water, okay?”-Amelia tells him.
He thanks Amelia and then she goes. Ian looks at her tense.
“No Amy… You wouldn’t, no…” -He says to himself.
When she gets back, he drinks water and then they go to her room. Ian looks around and smiles. Then compliments her for the organization and decoration. But again, something rumbles in his head. Noticing his expression, she turns around and sees a slight seriousness in his expression, then asks:
“Ian, is everything alright?”
Ian walks to her, grabs her hands and levels them to the chest, and questions her:
“Amy, you trust me, right?”
“Yes Ian, I trust you, why?”-She replies.
He looks at her eyes trying to hide discomfort, then asks:
“Would it be okay if I asked you to lay down with me?”
She affirms it by shaking her head. They lay in bed and hug, then look at each other’s eyes. Ian says:
“I feel I've known you for a long time.”
Her gaze turns nervous and her eyes fill with tears.
“That is because I do...”-She affirms.
He looks at her in shock and stands up, she sits down looking down.
“You don’t remember, but we dated since primary school, until high school. You cheated on me… But I, I never stopped loving you…”
Ian’s eyes become wet. She stands up and grabs his hands, but he steps back. She tells:
“Ian, I’m sorry I didn’t have the courage to tell you from the beginning, I’m sorry…”
Ian looks at her pale, she walks to him, he replies:
“Don’t get closer. I don’t believe you.”
He leaves and so her tears fill her eyes.
Three weeks goes by, Amelia opens up to Nicole, and the two decide to not let anything be an obstacle to their friendship. But sadness still accompanies Amelia every time her eyes presence Ian, who for her seems not to notice the immense pain. While walking to the front door of the house. Amelia drops the house’s key. Ian picks up the keys, she looks at him surprised, while her eyes quickly express all the feelings, she possesses for him, in seconds.
“Ian, thanks…”-She says.
With a blank expression he looks at her eyes and says:
“There is something I need to tell you, something I didn’t remember when you told me the truth. But know I am completely sure.”
Amelia looks at him intrigued.
“I remembered you… I was in love with you... But I am not who you think I am. My mother… My mother made me believe I was him, but I am not. But I love you Amelia, I love you no matter what…”
She looks at him in tension and asks:
“Ian, what are you talking about?”
“Ian was my twin brother, he died in the accident… I am Evan. And I can prove it because I have a birthmark on my back that Ian didn’t have.”-He confesses.
Evan shows his back to her. Amelia sees the birthmark astonished while the while the tears run incessantly. His eyes fill with an ocean of sadness. After six seconds he turns around and they look into each other’s eye, she says in between tears:
“Evan… It’s you…”
“I’m sorry this happened and that he had to die.”-He says in pain.
After six seconds he looks down and says:
“I’ll leave now and I won’t get close to you if you don’t want me to.”
He walks one step; she looks at him tense.
“I felt the difference...”
Evan stops tense. She walks and stops facing his face, then says:
“I couldn’t find reasons…”
“I’m sorry I wasn’t honest in the past; I wasn’t honest to him either. But I can’t stop loving you.”-He replies.
She looks to her left anxious. He touches her cheek with a penetrating gaze and expresses:
“You didn’t dislike the differences in my personality, my kisses... But you feel guilty because I wasn’t him.”
Amelia sees him nervous and tells him to stop talking.
“No.”-He says.
He kisses her passionately, she tries not to reciprocate pushing his chest away, but as the seconds pass, she gives in to her feelings while he grabs her hands. After thirty-five seconds they cease and look into each other’s eyes. He asks her:
“If you want me to leave now, tell me and I promise I’ll try my best to forget you.”
She maintains silence. He looks to his right with a firm gaze.
“Be honest Amy, please. If you still love him and I’m wrong, I need to hear it.”-He adds.
“I… I didn’t realize what I was feeling wasn’t towards Ian…And yes, I felt guilt…”
He looks at her, she touches his cheeks.
“But I want the guy I meet weeks ago next to me, because I do love him.”
He grabs her left hand and smiles.
“You made me fall in love with you twice, and you could make me fall again if I lose my memory again.”
They kiss passionately.
