It's a chilly evening in November, everyone in the family is gathering around the table in the backyard; decored by some yellowish hanging lights across the yard, white cloth on the table, gold accents in the dishes.
It's Thanksgiving, the turkeys are looking good, the scent of my father's pasta is in the air, the sound of wine glasses hitting around and the drunken laughs of everyone, as I am sitting on a couch a little distanced so I can admire the look of my family enjoying the occasion.
It was the first time in a long time since all of us were together. Everything was perfect.
"So, have you told them yet?"
"Told them what?” I replied, batting my eyelashes.
"Come on, Elle. Have you told them you lost the baby?"
I gasped sadly, smiled slightly and took a drawn-out sip of my wine. Hannah was one of those women who always saw peoples' bullshit and always called them out for it. And yet she was simultaneously the sweetest, most giving creature on the planet. No matter what, I know I can always count on her because she always has my back, she's my best friend indeed.
"What gave me away?" I laughed and bit into the carrot cake my grandma had made. "Oh I don't know, maybe the fact that you have drastically changed your nude clothes for the gray and dull colors, and that you're not the Sunshine-Elle, but the Rainy-Elle." Hannah aggressively took a large swig of her wine and half-jokingly slammed the glass down on the small wicker coffee table. "Yeah, I guess I am not trying too hard to hide it at this point. " I chuckled ironically but Hannah raised her thick-and-perfect eyebrows and peered over her glasses. Uh oh. The serious look.
''For how -''
''Elle, come over here!'' my older brother yelled. ''Aunt Georgia is telling that story from when you got stuck in the toilet!'' as he finished his sentence, everyone began to laugh, Hannah stared at me and made me a sign to move.
As I was approaching the rest of the clan, the doorbell ringed. Everyone seemed to be confused, who was missing? I made a quick count and apparently no one, confused and intrigued, as I was the soberest, I went to the door to open.
The first thing that my eyes captured, was a very tall man, with black wavy hair, he was backway so I could not see his face, dressed in a black leather jacket, some dark jeans, and some brown boots.
I faked a cough.
As the man turned, his features were more familiar, when he was completely turned, my face was a literal poem.
''Happy thanksgiving, Elle.'' Noah talked, my ex Fianceé, the one who shredded my heart apart, was right at my front door.
''Elle, where are you?!'' I heard Hannah scream. ''Elle, couldn't yo- Noah, what the -''
''Noah Ryder, what an unpleasant surprise!'' anger pouring through my veins. At a blink of an eye, my whole entire family was behind me. Oh God, I really wish I was not sober at this very instant. ''What are you doing here?''
''Yeah, man, what in bloody hell are you doing here?''
''How dare you come over, scumbag?'' Are just some of the nice things I heard my crew yell.
''I am here to beg Elle apologies, I know I went off bad, but it wasn't me at that time, you have to believe me!'' perfectly manicured beard, dark green eyes, juicy red lips, he looked like next week's GQ cover model.
''Noah, come on, please! I think it's enough, just leave. Sufficient damage you have caused already.''
''But...''
I closed the door in his face, and turned to my family saying: ''Ok, ready to continue drinking and partying?''
Laughs and cheers were all that matter at that moment.
But that wasn't enough for him; Ryder continues to knock on the front door, begging for me to hear him out. I practically drag everyone into the backyard, trying to ignore the fact that my ex-fiance is in front of my door, knocking on it, to let him in to explain.
''Angel, come on! open the door'' he cries out.
I leave my family enjoying the thanksgiving meal, making sure nobody notices that I left, I get up and go to the door when I open it, an astonished Noah falls. With a flushed face and irritated eyes, he stands up to speak, his wavy black hair falling on his forehead, making him look as handsome as ever. I hate talking about him this way yet. His voice more hoarse than normal since he had been shouting at me for about 3 hours, the moonlight made his skin glow.
'' Can you move? '' I ask sharply
''Ellie, come on, let me explain''
''Noah, all you've done tonight is disturb the nice ambient my family and friends were having, and by consequence: my goddamn night!. I- I don't understand what the hell you're doing here, to be honest.'' I shouted.
''I know it was the worst timing, but it's not like if you're at home lately, and I could never break into your office just so you can hear me out and cause you trouble there, hell no''
''At least you're kinda conscious in THAT aspect'' I murmured and turned my eyes.
He looked at me offended: `` I may have made a mistake, that does not make me unconscious, Angel, either way, I know I probably will never have your confidence again, I just wanted you to know that I am very sorry and that I would like us to try again, for the sake of the baby coming, please. If we do not succeed, we will simply have to learn to be separate responsible parents, I will make sure that nothing is ever lacking.''
I laughed, I really did laugh. His green eyes shining in confusion, his long fingers brushing his hair, and his bushy eyebrows furrowed in disorientation.
''Oh, Noah, I don't really think we're going to have to worry about all that, because Uhm... I lost the baby''
His eyes widen in perplexity, and he finds no words to say, his red and fluffy lips opening and closing. '' Bye, Noah, '' I say, turning around and closing the door, leaving a very black-haired man on my porch; When I turn to leave, my family was in the living room, very perplexed, so, apparently, they had just heard.
Crap. What an unpleasant thanksgiving it had become.
