Fiction Teens & Young Adult Friendship

Day 1:

โ€œDonโ€™t be a pest Diana, go play with your friend,โ€ I gestured at Lily Kennels.

Diana rolled her eyes at me, slumping back to Lily.

โ€œDadโ€ฆ why did we need to bring them along?โ€ I made sure to speak softly.

โ€œGeez Abbyโ€ฆ itโ€™s only one dayโ€ฆ canโ€™t you adjust?โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ I snapped, folding my hands.

โ€œBehave,โ€ He warned.

I groaned.ย

If only my little sister hadn't been BFFโ€™s with the sister of an annoying jerk.

Tonyโ€ฆ ugh, I hated him. Ever since we were little heโ€™d tease me, steal my jacket and throw it in the boys bathroom. Iโ€™d cry, wailโ€ฆ complain to the grown-ups but I stopped doing that. Heโ€™d just call me a snitcher or crybaby.ย

Now my parents force me to โ€˜hang outโ€™ with that obnoxious boy.ย

โ€œHey.โ€

I ignored him, scrolling through my phone.

โ€œHello?โ€ He called louder, my eardrum hurt.

โ€œWHAT!โ€ I realized that heโ€™d made me speak.ย

He chuckling under his breath.

โ€œAbby?โ€

โ€œLeave me alone,โ€ I yelled, then regretting it immediately. My momโ€™s face hung a depressed sigh.ย

โ€œSorry, thought you were someone else.โ€

โ€œSweetheart, I know how you feelโ€ฆ justโ€ฆ play nice.โ€

โ€œI know.โ€

โ€œAlso, can you take care of the kids while Richard and I go find a good fishing spotโ€ฆ see if the fish are biting?โ€ I liked that she included Tony as โ€˜kidsโ€™.

โ€œGladly,โ€ I was grinning.ย

โ€œThanks,โ€ She placed a small kiss on my forehead and handed me her travel bag that sheโ€™d loaded up specially for our camping trip emergencies.

โ€œCall me if anything goes downhill.โ€

I nodded, taking the heavy sack.

โ€œWhereโ€™s mom?โ€

โ€œShe left, going to find some fishing spot.โ€

โ€œCan I have a marshmallow?โ€ Diana used her puppy eyes. I shook my head, her face fell.

โ€œNot until dinner,โ€ย

โ€œGodโ€ฆ. you sound like mom.โ€ She ironically added.

โ€œWhatever, just play with Lily but donโ€™t wander too far.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m not a baby you know.โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆ I know that.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m just a year younger than you,โ€ She walked away before I could react. I never realized Diana felt that way. Sure I might tease her a bit but do I treat her like a baby?

My focus reverted back to my phone. I attached my earplugs on my ears, slowly mouthing the words my favorite music produced. I was in my own world nowโ€ฆ no pesky little sisterโ€ฆ no bossy parents and especially no rude guys.

I was so engrossed into the music I didnโ€™t hear Tony call out my name. He tapped lightly on my shoulder, indicating our surroundings. I didnโ€™t realize what he was saying but then I understoodโ€ฆ the girls were missing!

โ€œDianaโ€ฆ Lily, where are you? Itโ€™s been five minutes and I still haven't found them. Mom would kill me if she found out I lost them.

โ€œWhy didnโ€™t you stop them?โ€ I yelled at Tonyโ€™s face. He kept quiet, calling out their names like a mantra yet we didnโ€™t get a response.

โ€œI didnโ€™t pay attention,โ€ His eyes were wide, I almost thought they looked scared.

โ€œWellโ€ฆ now we lost them, thanks to you.โ€

โ€œHey! Itโ€™s not all my fault, you didnโ€™t care about your sister to keep an eye on her,โ€ He complained. I was taken back, tears rolling down my cheeks but I continued to search without fruitless attempts.

โ€œIโ€™mโ€ฆ scared.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, weโ€™ll find them.โ€

The light around us began to dim. It was duskโ€ฆ my parents would have probably returned to camp and freaked out to see the empty campsite.

โ€œIโ€™m a terrible sister, mom shouldnโ€™t have made me in charge,โ€ I muttered, sitting on the nearby rock. I was exhausted, my legs gave up yet my heart couldnโ€™t. Dianaโ€ฆ she was my best friend, my little sister, my life. I couldnโ€™t imagine how frightened sheโ€™d be. I knew Tony felt the same way about Lily.

โ€œYou're the best sister Diana could ask for,โ€ He placed a hand on my shoulder. Surprisingly it calmed me.ย

โ€œThanks.โ€

He helped me to my feet again. The vegetation was increasing the more we walked away from base camp.ย

I checked my phone for the time to realize I had no signalโ€ฆ just wonderful.

โ€œYou got a signal?โ€

He checked his.

โ€œNope, weโ€™re too far I guess.โ€

โ€œI hope they're ok.โ€

โ€œYeahโ€ฆ donโ€™t take the whole burden on you.โ€

I nodding shyly.

โ€œWhatโ€™s the sudden chance?โ€ I mocked, trying to lighten the mood.

โ€œOhโ€ฆ I donโ€™t know, maybe I realized sheโ€™s more than I thought she was,โ€ He winked.ย

I blushed, staring into the sky that darkened with every breath I produced.

We walked side by side. Admiring the beauty that only came out in the dark.ย

He brushed his hand on mine, smiling softly. I wanted to keep this moment forever, keep repeating it.

โ€œWhatโ€™s that?โ€ His focus shifted back to our mission. I looked to meet his glance.

โ€œI thinkโ€ฆ itโ€™s a cave?โ€ I could barely make out the stony structure.

We looked at each other in shock.ย

โ€œOh no, no way did they go in there,โ€ I mumbled.

โ€œI know my sisterโ€ฆ sheโ€™s definitely curious,โ€ He bend down and picking a small hair clip.ย

I gasped.

โ€œThatโ€™s Dianaโ€™s.โ€

We ran inside, our weak voices echoing through the walls. Water dripped from the ceiling, it was getting darker faster inside. Bats began to wake up to our footsteps.ย

โ€œYou think theyโ€™re here?โ€ He asked.

โ€œPositive,โ€ I really hoped I was right.ย

โ€œYou got a flashlight in there?โ€ He pointed to my backpack. I shrugged, removing the flap and digging out an old flashlight.

I handed it to him.

โ€œShould we spread out?โ€ I suggested.ย

I covered my eyes as he shined the flashlight on my face.

โ€œItโ€™s not safeโ€ฆ weโ€™ll stay together,โ€ He countered.

I nodded, glad that he cared about my safety.

My shoulders ached from carrying the heavy bag. Sharp jagged rocks teared our pants but we continued to walk forward not knowing the consequences. We had low oxygen levels. My breathing became less abored.ย

โ€œYou good?โ€

โ€œYeahโ€ฆ Iโ€™m justโ€ฆ what ifโ€ฆโ€ He placed his finger on my parted mouth, shaking his head.

โ€œItโ€™s ok,โ€ He muttered each syllable slowly.

I shivered from the cold, I felt shivers through my spine. My teeth chattered from the lack of warmth.ย

โ€œMaybeโ€ฆโ€ He stopped, motioning for me to keep still.

I gave him a confused look then I understood. Someone was crying, it was very low but I could hear them. I heard soft murmurs being produced from behind the big rock.

I wiped my tears, walking ahead.

โ€œDiana? Lily?โ€

They turned around at the sound of my voice. Poor girls, theyโ€™ve been sitting here. Crying. I hugged them, comforting them that everythingโ€™s good now.

โ€œWhy did you leave?โ€ I demanded after they were able to speak correctly again.

โ€œIโ€ฆ Iโ€™m sorry Abby, we wanted to explore and kinda stumbled here?โ€ They mumbled, looking at each other and hanging their heads.ย

โ€œSorry,โ€ They finished.

โ€œWellโ€ฆ youโ€™re both in trouble butโ€ฆ we better get out of here first,โ€ I locked eyes with Tony. Keeping my hands secured into theirs so they donโ€™t escape againโ€ฆ not that they will ever dare.

โ€œUmโ€ฆ Abby?โ€ย

โ€œYeah Tony?โ€

โ€œDo you know which way to go?โ€

My mouth dropped. I shook my head.

We were lostโ€ฆ

Day 2:

โ€œIโ€™m hungry,โ€ Diana complained. Her tummy rumbled in unison.

โ€œI think Iโ€™ve got some food in here,โ€ I handed her a granola bar from the bag. She made a face but took it anyway.

โ€œTony? Any luck?โ€ He had been trying to get a signal but so far no luck at that.

โ€œNoโ€ฆ dang it,โ€ He whispered, I winced from his tone.ย

โ€œWhat time is it?โ€ Lilyโ€™s been the most quiet one, I forgot she was even here.

โ€œLet me checkโ€ฆ itโ€™s 9 in the morning.โ€

She yawned.ย

โ€œSleep,โ€ I instructed. She obeyed immediately.

I rested my head against the hard surface, tears dripping down my cheeks.ย

โ€œDonโ€™t cryโ€ฆ weโ€™ll get outโ€ฆ somehow.โ€

I looked at his eyes, they were filled with more hope than mine. Yet, I couldnโ€™t believe him.

I closed my own eyes, letting the darkness sweep in.

Day 3:

โ€œOwโ€ฆ it hurts so much.โ€

I took a deep breath, bandaging Lilyโ€™s scar on her shin. She had tried to climb up the rocks but got hurt instead.

โ€œShhโ€ฆ itโ€™ll be fine,โ€ I cooed.

Tony smiled, seeing me take care of his sister.

โ€œThanks,โ€ He mouthed.

โ€œIโ€™m not doing this for you.โ€

He grinned, โ€œWhatever.โ€

Day 4:

Lifeโ€™s not fair.

I never really experienced thatโ€ฆ until now. Weโ€™ve been cooped up in this cave for more than three days.ย

We were running out of daily essentials, supplies getting low. Diana was sick from drinking water produced by the caves. Sheโ€™s been moaning about stomach aches.

I felt completely crushed. My sister was in pain, Lily was injured and we were never getting out of here. Iโ€™d promised the girls we would be safe but I needed some reassurance myself.

Tony had been awfully quiet the past hours, reading his comic book as if nothing had happened.ย

โ€œHey.โ€

I seated near him, peeking at what book amused him.

โ€œOh hi,โ€ He closed the book, his eyes down.

We kept still, Diana and Lily were sleeping. Their soft snores echoed through the walls.ย

โ€œIโ€™mโ€ฆ Iโ€™m so sorry,โ€ He whispered, โ€œI canโ€™t figure out where to go from here.โ€

โ€œItโ€™s not your fault.โ€

โ€œI should have been nicer to youโ€ฆ Iโ€™m deeply sorry for treating you so badly.โ€

My face heated up.

โ€œWill you ever forgive me?โ€ย

โ€œYes,โ€ I breathed. Weโ€™d become super close to each other these past days.ย

โ€œThanks,โ€ He went back to reading.

I settled near my sister, brushing her hair from her forehead and placing a kiss.

โ€œIโ€™ll make this rightโ€ฆ I promiseโ€

Day 5:

โ€œWhatโ€™s that noise?โ€

โ€œLilyโ€ฆ itโ€™s just a bat,โ€ Tony answered her. She huddled closer to her brother, her wound was getting infected to the lack of cleanliness.

โ€œDonโ€™t worry Lily, weโ€™re here.โ€

I smiled at Diana. Sheโ€™d been very supportive of her jumpy friend.ย

โ€œTony,โ€ I pronounced his name, it felt weird to beโ€ฆ friends.

โ€œYeah?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m going to walk for a few minutesโ€ฆ see if I can spot an opening.โ€

โ€œAbby?โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll be fine.โ€

He nodded but his eyes showed fear.

I stumbled to walk forward, my clothes were soiled, we hadn't had a chance to change our clothes since the first time we entered the cave. How Iโ€™d taken all those essentials for granted, now when I needed them they arenโ€™t available.

My Nikes were not fit for this kind of adventure.

I felt Tonyโ€™s eyes behind my back as I took unsteady steps.

The next second I heard his name call out in alarm, I didnโ€™t know what was going on until everything became dark.

Day 6:

โ€œAre you hurt?โ€

โ€œNo, no Iโ€™m goodโ€ฆ at least I think.โ€

โ€œI canโ€™t reach you, the rocks trapped youโ€ฆโ€ His voice faded.

โ€œTony!?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m here,โ€ He shoved his hand inside the small crack. His hand was bleeding when our hands joined.

โ€œIโ€™m here,โ€ He repeated.

โ€œYouโ€™re hurt.โ€

โ€œComes with the job,โ€ I heard him cough up a laugh.

I stayed near him even if I couldnโ€™t see him. I was disconnected from them but they were still here for me. Diana yelped when she found out.

โ€œIโ€™m scared,โ€ Diana whimpered.

โ€œWe all are,โ€ Lily added.

โ€œTonyโ€ฆ will we ever get out?โ€ I heard Diana ask.

โ€œI... โ€œ He didnโ€™t respond.ย

He wanted me to answerโ€ฆ he wasnโ€™t confident either.

I wasnโ€™t sure if I was ready to admit the truth either. We all were young, we havenโ€™t even had a chance at life. Will we die? Will our death be a mystery always? What will our parents do? Our life? Was it destroyed?

I felt nausea hit me. I closed my eyes, holding onto his hand. The only thing that kept me alive.

Day 7:

โ€œLily are you okay?โ€ I woke to the sound of Dianaโ€™s faint voice. She was sobbing.ย

โ€œWhat'sโ€ฆ wrong,โ€ My lack of oxygen had made my voice into a whisper.

โ€œAbby! You're awake?โ€

โ€œYes, what'sโ€ฆ what happened?โ€

โ€œLilyโ€™s sickโ€ฆ home sick, donโ€™t fret... Dianaโ€™s a natural.โ€

โ€œDiana? At what?โ€

โ€œA doctor, didn't know Mrs. Bossyboots had some skills,โ€ I wheezed a small laugh.

Laughing felt so good. I could almost taste freedom.

A dim light shimmering just above me, if I hadnโ€™t paid attention I never would have guessed there was a light source.

Curious, I stood up. My heartbeat quickened, I felt the whiff of clean air in a while. Iโ€™ve gotten used to the mucky oxygen that just a % cleaner would feel like heaven.

It took all my might to stand straight. My toe-fingers were numb from sitting so long in a cramped area but I managed.

โ€œI see an opening.โ€

I heard Tonyโ€™s subdued footsteps.

โ€œWhere?โ€

โ€œUp,โ€ I trailed off, โ€œIโ€™d have to climb.โ€

โ€œNo,โ€ย

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œItโ€™sโ€ฆ too risky, I canโ€™t bear to lose you,โ€ I felt my face blush.

โ€œTonyโ€ฆ itโ€™s our only chance.โ€

โ€œTo get yourself hurt or... killed?โ€ He demanded.

โ€œI donโ€™t have to take your permission,โ€ I muttered.

He fell silent, not able to counter my response.

โ€œPlease,โ€ I felt the pain in his voice, โ€œDonโ€™t.โ€

I sighed, โ€œIโ€™ll be careful.โ€

Day 8:

Right

Left

Breath

Iโ€™ll be fine

Think of the outcome

Rightย

Left

I can do this

Iโ€™m strong

Breath

Think of Diana and Lily

About Tony

I canโ€™t let them down

My teeth clenched tighter together as I arched my way up. Iโ€™d tried all night. I had lost my footing a couple of times, bruising myself but nothing severe. Tony hadnโ€™t spoken to me since our little argument. Diana kept tabs on me, making sure I was ok.ย

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to do this.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ll be ok,โ€ I said, keeping my left foot near a sturdy rock. I hoped rock climbing lessons paid off.

โ€œI canโ€™t bearโ€ฆโ€ She stopped.

I didnโ€™t notice her whimper.

I kept an eye beyond.

Weโ€™ll be saved.

I steadied myself on a glassy rock, my limbs were wearing out. My hand were bleeding from placing them on sharp, jagged edges.

My breathing was shallow, my heart was racing.

But Iโ€™d made it.

Finally.

Weโ€™ll be free.

Day 9:

The sky seemed much closer now. I didnโ€™t realize that Iโ€™d fallen asleep on the rock. I could feel the breeze from the nearby ocean, the smell of salt water hit me instantly, calming my nerves.

โ€œGuys?โ€

โ€œAre you ok?โ€ I almost smiled at the mellow voice of Lily. She had kept a brave face during this whole mess.

โ€œIโ€™m better than ok.โ€

โ€œAbby? Whats the matter?โ€ Diana asked.

โ€œOh Diana, weโ€™re saved!โ€

โ€œAbby, you didnโ€™t,โ€ Tony.ย

โ€œYes, I did it.โ€

โ€œHow will you get off? Jump?โ€

โ€œMaybe?โ€

I could feel him rolling his eyes.

โ€œHave some sense.โ€

โ€œGee, thanks for the wise words,โ€ I sarcastically added.

I explained my plan to them, telling them to stay put while I bring help. Tony was stubborn but agreed anyway.

โ€œGood luck,โ€ Lily and Diana chanted.

โ€œDonโ€™t get yourself killed,โ€ I rolled my eyes at Tonyโ€™s comment.

โ€œI wonโ€™t.โ€

It was the first time I climbed outside, the opening was narrow but my slender body managed to fit through perfectly.

Freedom.

The air outside helped me regain some strengthโ€ฆ Iโ€™d need it. After what was coming.

An ocean.

How would I ever cross it?

I wasnโ€™t much of a trained swimmer, only took a few lessons that momโ€™s friend offered to take for free. Iโ€™m afraid she didnโ€™t include how to jump from a cliff, straight into a roaring ocean that is ready to swallow me whole.

I trembled from the cold, just beyond I spotted the forestโ€ฆ the campsiteโ€ฆ mom and dad.Taking a deep breath, I lunged forward. Diving in.

Day 10:

I choked out the excess water. My body was dripping wet and I was freezing. My bagโ€ฆ Iโ€™d left it back with Tony. My phone. Just great. I had been cut off all kinds of communication.ย

I walked forward. That was all I could do. Just walk. I knew my parents were probably gone home thinking we were missing, never to be found. Maybe they thought we ran away. I didnโ€™t know. I was clueless.

My adrenaline pumped faster, my head dizzy. My eyelids shut. My body drooped and I fell to the ground.

โ€œHoney?โ€

โ€œIs she alive?โ€

โ€œYes, her heart is beating.โ€

My eyes stirred up from the unfamiliar voices around me. I felt a secure hand pull me up.

โ€œWhereโ€ฆ am I?โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t worry, youโ€™re safe.โ€

I rubbed my eyes, forcing on the voices.

โ€œWho are you?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m Dr. Mendoza, this man brought you here, says that he found you lying faint in the camping grounds.โ€

I caressed my head, looking at my savior.ย

โ€œThank you,โ€ I mouthed.

He nodded.

โ€œWhere are your parents sweetie?โ€

โ€œIโ€ฆ I donโ€™t know.โ€

โ€œNames?โ€

โ€œSarah and Richard Maxwell.โ€

โ€œWhat a coincidence.โ€ I gave a puzzled look.

โ€œTen years ago a young couple with the same names had lost their children and some friends of theirs, they were really devastated.โ€

I felt a limp in my throat at the mention of themโ€ฆ. waitโ€ฆ 10 years?ย

โ€œWhatโ€™s todays date?โ€

โ€œWhy itโ€™s the 12 of October.โ€

โ€œThe year?โ€ Dr. Mendoza looked confused.

โ€œ2016.โ€

I gasped. It had been 10 years.ย

โ€œAre you alright?โ€

โ€œYes,โ€ I thanked the doctor, setting off into the unknown. 10 yearsโ€ฆ how am I the same old me? How had time ticked past so quickly that what felt like days was actually years.

The cave.

It was something supernatural.

Not ordinary.

Then it striked me.

If just spending a day there was equivalent to a yearโ€ฆ thenโ€ฆ how will they ever get out of that time loop. Iโ€™d never see them.

I felt tears prick my eyes.

Diana.

Lily.

Tony.

What would happen to them.

I walked forward.

โ€œI will, I promise to find a way.โ€

Woah this is so good! There are a very few bits where it doesnโ€™t feel too natural like โ€œmom shouldnโ€™t have made me in charge...โ€ would work better with a โ€œputโ€ instead of โ€œmadeโ€ but other than that, this is SO GOOD! Also thanks so so so so so so so much for adding me to your biooooo!!! AAAAAAA THANKSSSS ๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿ’•๐Ÿช๐Ÿฅฐ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿ’œ

Hey Varsha! There are some really great moments here. All of the characters are nicely developed, especially the main one, but the side characters too, which I think is something you struggle with a little. The dialogue is great, it really sounds like talking, but there's just so much of it. It really needs to be cut with more thoughts and feelings, in my opinion. Still. I loved the characters, the plot, everything. Nice work! You actually did the only prompt that I didn't do this week, lol. Would you mind checking out my stories for this w...
