Urban Fantasy Mystery Horror

(A little side story base on the Theta story line...Omega Huntress Kaitlin Santiago and her handler are featured)

Her hair was red and her eyes were indigo. Her attire was simply a green shirt and a pair of black jeans with tennis shoes. She didn’t know why they were here. It was something for actual police, not them or so she thought. Jericho seemed interested in the break in, but she really wasn’t.

Jericho was considered her handler by way of Marshal Hays of the Midnight Order. Why the handlers had to compete for the role was rather annoying when there was only the two of them. Maybe it was some privilege but Kaitlin Santiago doubted it. He wasn’t that bad to look at with his long dirty blonde hair that he wore in a ponytail and the blue eyes that he had. He wore jeans and a t-shirt with work boots.

“Mrs. Elliot”, he flashed a fake badge for the woman to see. Of course the handlers would have access to all that weird stuff. “I am Detective Vaughn and this is my partner Detective Santiago. Can you tell us what happened here and what was taken?”

The older lady was in the process of losing her mind. “Yes, Detective, I came in this morning to do some baking here at Della Ray’s Bakery around five am. When I got here, the place was ransacked. I did a fast evaluation of the kitchen”, she pointed at the total disaster in the kitchen, “I found it like this and IT is missing.”

Kaitlin walked over and began to have a look through the mess. Flour was everywhere and the sugar was too. Brown sugar crunched under her shoe and she narrowly missed a puddle of powdered sugar. This mess even had eggs thrown about. There was a print stepped into a soften stick of butter that made the girl pause. It looked to be a boot of some sort. She walked along further and found buried in baking powder a small loop from a decorative chain. She pocketed it and continued to look through the trashed kitchen.

“Can you tell me what IT is?”

“Mrs. Della Ray’s secret ingredient for her special Black Garlic Cookies, I know specifically because I was supposed to make them for a party. It was a murder mystery party that is tonight. All the Special Imported Black Garlic is gone.”

“Interesting, is there someone that the bakery might be competing with that could have sabotaged this event order?”

“Della Ray’s makes the most exquisite cookies in town. When it comes to cookies, she has no rivals. I don’t know who could have done this.”

Kaitlin allowed her handler to play the chatty cop as she continued to look around. The woman seemed consumed that the black garlic was gone, but the other garlics seemed to be gone too. That vampire we are hunting could have something to do with it. Maybe he or she is such a new born that they don’t realize that garlic is just a spice and doesn’t do anything.

After the interview, the pair stepped outside.

“What did you notice”, Jericho asked her.

“Nothing really other than that kitchen has absolutely any garlic at all. You told me that this is a vampire that we are tracking. Vampires see garlic like we do a spice. So why would he steal garlic to keep garlic cookies from appearing at a murder party?”

Jericho shrugged, “There is so much pathetic lore out there and maybe the dummy thinks it can hurt him somehow. It doesn’t matter really. Playing the role of detectives was simply to try and track the numbskull down. Did you find anything?”

Kaitlin nodded, “Other than bake goods everywhere, I found a print in a softened stick of smashed butter and this.” She handed him the loop.

The handler took it and looked at it. “Someone wearing a chain that got broke. It looks like it might be the one you were sent here to do in. Maybe she thinks that if she gets rid of the garlic then she could use the party as a hunting ground.”

Kaitlin sighed, “So I am going to the party tonight to try and fairy out the vampire lady?”

He handed her an invitation that he managed to get a hold of and walked away from her.

She read over the invitation in silence:

Chain gang Biker Murder mystery house party

               1250 Sinopec Rd

Wear punk or biker attire is a must to capture the whole effect of the story to come solve the murder of the biker leader.

Kaitlin sighed and walked down the street to a store that had leather jackets and things that she saw earlier. If she was being forced to go, she would need attire to fit the role of the investigations and the party flow.

As she walked in, she noticed one thing first off. The window was actually separated from the rest of the store. There was only light from the door and there was only one person on duty. The woman that was working stocked a shelf behind the counter.

Being observant, the huntress noticed that a broken chain like the loop she found was sitting on the counter. The boots that the woman wore also had a touch of confectioners’ sugar on them. She also noticed a box just behind the counter with some glass jars in it. One of the jars had black garlic cloves in it and the other has regular cloves in it.

The clerk looked up. She was a brown haired woman with odd but green eyes. “Can I help you?”

“I’m going to a party tonight that requires me to dress like a biker. Although this looks like the garlic stolen from the bakery down the street.”

The woman stiffened up, “So what if it is.” She threw a switch and Kaitlin heard the door lock. “I was careless, I admit, but it isn’t like you are going to tell anyone.” She hissed and fangs were apparent under her lip when it rose.

Kaitlin tossed a stone pendant on the floor before her and the woman froze. “You know what that is, right?”

The woman was suddenly fearful and started to back up, “An Order Hunter, why are you here?”

She sighed, “I know you are new to this whole vampire thing. You might have been bit and abandoned by some other newbie, but we can’t let you run amuck and kill people all Willy nilly. That is why I am here because you called way too much attention to yourself.”

The woman ran at Kaitlin and the huntress raised a hand. An unseen force seemed to knock the woman back into some candles that she had burning and like most vampire, she combusted on the spot. As she started to scream as she was consumed. Unfortunately or fortunately it was hard to say which, the fire began to jump to other parts of the store.

Kaitlin left her invitation and slid out an emergency exit with the jar of black garlic. She returned to the bakery as a fire truck rushed down the street to the Goth store. She left the garlic where it would be found and went back to the hotel room where Jericho was waiting.

As she walked in, “We can hit the road now.”

               “What happened?”

“I found the garlic and as you can hear by the fire trucks, the vampire too. She was at the store I walked into. Killed her, she caught the store on fire, and case end point. We can leave as soon as you are ready.”

They grabbed their things and left.

No evidence that they were even there was left behind. Like ghosts on the wind...they were gone.

The ending was in a bit rush though but I loved the concept of the story. You clearly gave justice to the prompt. I loved your unique idea. There were some grammar mistakes but you know it's ok. I would love your feedback on some of my stories. Do read it in your free time.

Yes! This story is epic! This story took quite a turn, not a traditional holiday feel-good story, but an incredible vampire/horror story!

Well, not really feeling the holidays much right now, so I made it a small link into the Theta story line. Granted it involves the other Omega and her handler, but it is a stand alone side thing.

With the Theta thing, I have back tracked a couple of chapters. I figure to introduce a few more things before getting into the Order a bit more. I added a detail or two that was not it the chapter before, such as to why Selena was not bothered again for the night after he claimed her due to scouts of the Order that came to investigate the disappearance of Bruce and Selena...I actually intend to have a few of the male hunters show up in the area.

Vampires and bakeries. Interesting recipe for a story. Thank you for writing it. I hope that you don't mind, but I think I may have found some errors (if I haven't; please accept my apologies; I really did enjoy your story): they place was ransacked ["they" probably should be "the"] This even had eggs thrown about. [Maybe say: "Even the eggs had been thrown about."?] It was a murder mystery party that is tonight. [Maybe say "It was for a murder mystery party being held tonight."] could have something to do with it. [maybe...

You did find a few errors, though I might have noticed them in a few days, but meh. Understand, when the baker is talking, she is panicking. Even me in a Panic attack, I am not always coherent. She is more in fear that the garlic is gone. Imported means High dollar normally. "That vampire we are hunting could have something to do with it. Maybe he or she is such a new born that they don’t realize that garlic is just a spice and doesn’t do anything. " That statement is merely a thought inside of Kaitlin's head. Not meant for anyone...

If you want, you can continue using me as your free editor. Especially if the story is as interesting as this one is. And hopefully I'll make fewer mistakes in the future when pointing out what seem to be errors. It helps to understand more of the background material. Maybe that's why I prefer Tolkien's "The Silmarillion" over "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings". I like learning about the background material. Oh! That explains the garlic comment much better. I wasn't thinking of its price; I was thinking of its different uses ...

The Midnight Order doesn't want the world to know about Vampires or any other creature of the night. They had just resigned entire family blood lines to hunting them. They would pretend to be detectives, but in reality, they heard about a bakery robbery and garlic was the subject, so they were faking. I wished for different prompts as my oven isn't working and I want to bake...>.> *Sigh* I will say this...Selena and Lucian is a bit of a love connection, though reluctant in the beginning but they are the central part of the first par...

I'm not sure I would've said "resigned". Maybe "reassigned" or maybe "Entire family bloodlines were committed to hunting them". (Kind of like Cassandra Clare's Shadowhunter books.) Ah! I like that. And the police are unaware of this unusual group of helpers (or think that they're also police officers or private detectives, but they aren't). The Midnight Order likely has ways of tracking down vampires, etc. that the police just don't have. I wanted different prompts, too. I'm not much of a cook, unlike both of my older brothers an...

Story wise it is just beginning. Granted she didn't have a choice in the matter by being claimed by him and Selena is attracted to him. They haven't had much of any arguments yet. Selena is also a thinking woman...IE: OK, I was claimed and even have his bite...if the Order catches up with me, it could get me executed. Or worse...maybe forced into Theta's role in modern times...and with Bruce dead...that means the runner up in the tournament to be Selena's handler would lay claim to her. She hates that guys, so she views Lucian as the le...
