Author's Note: This is Part 2 to another story I've written, Vampire Hunt. You probably want to read it to understand a lot of what happens in this one. Enjoy!
I groan, falling to the ground. My sword falls discarded to the side.
“Dederick! Alright, Alright, you win!” I say as he mockingly points his sword as my face. He laughs, helping me up.
“Not so rusty anymore, are we?”
“Man, I never knew one weekend of extra practice could get you so much better!”
“You better believe it! You’ve probably been holding me down.” I roll my eyes just as the captain comes over to us.
“Ernis, someone’s here to speak with you.” I inwardly groan as I nod and follow the captain to midfield. Last time this happened, I had to go kill a vampire. Well, actually, pretend to kill a vampire and return home. They haven’t found out yet…
The captain motions to a young woman looking up at the clouds. I can’t see her full face yet, but if I’m not mistaken she’s the same overstating seer from before.
This time, she’s wearing a short almost knee-length dress and her hair is considerably shorter, still with her signature flower crown on top. Her silvery eyes glint in the sunlight. After the weekend, the weather became much hotter. I’m sweating in my full armor. I sigh, preparing myself for what she has to say and walk up to her.
Once I’m next to her, I clear my throat.
“Oh! Ernis! Nice to see you again! You’re still in that armor? I thought they’d give you something lighter to wear in this blistering heat! I swear, one of you will probably die of heatstroke soon!” there she goes exaggerating again.
“Well? You wanted to speak to me?” I say, a hint of annoyance in my voice.
“Oh! My bad! This weather always makes me wanna ramble for some reason! Well, back to business. I know what you did... I know the ‘vampire’ you killed was actually a wolf.”
“Um, excuse me, but you can’t just accu-”
“Sh-sh! Don’t try and deceive me, darling. I’m a seer for goodness sake, don’t you think I know what a real vampire looks like? she says, putting her finger by my lips. I look down at her perfectly manicured fingers and back up at her face which is way too close to mine. I blush and push her away.
“I’m not trying to ‘deceive’ anyone-” the look on her face stops me. She rolls her eyes.
“It’s okay. You don’t have to be all flustered. I know why you did what you did.”
“Oh really?” I say, raising my eyebrows. She nods, putting a hand on my shoulder.
“You did it for love.” It takes all my willpower not to double over laughing.
“Look, if you’re done with all your assertions and so-called ‘prophecies’, then I better get back to training,” I say, just about leaving when she grabs my arm.
“Ernis, wait! I should’ve known not to tell you this so...so fast. Come to my tent tonight. I’ll explain as much as I can. And for God’s sake, do wear something a little more fitting for the weather.” she says, leaving.
“Hey, how will I even know where to go!” I call out after her. She laughs.
“Follow the blue jay!” oh, of course, she’ll give me some cryptic message like ‘follow the blue jay’. Whatever, not like I’m going to go anyway. Maybe if I don’t, she’ll finally leave me alone…
“Jade!” I pause for breath. “Jade, where are you! This. isn’t. Funny. Anymore!”
No answer. I sigh, running a little further into the forest. Even with wolf legs, my body’s starting to ache. I transform back into a human and plop down on a nearby tree stump.
Much appreciated wind blows a lock of my red hair into my face.
Suddenly, I hear the faintest sound of a leaf crackling like someone stepped on it. My wolf ears perk up as I jump, surveying the area.
There’s a wolf standing not too far away from me. I transform, ready to pounce when I realize the eyes of the wolf and detransform.
“You better detransform right now and explain,” I say crossing my eyes. Jade waits for a second and soon is her normal pretty self (not that her wolf self isn’t pretty) She sits on the stump I just jumped up from and sighs.
“Hey, Kat….” she sighs, “Look, I was just-”
“You better not have been hunting. They caught us once, they’ll catch us again, last time was way too close.” I cut her off.
“Actually...that’s what I have to tell you. I was scouting the grounds. There are knights, Kat. They know the wolf they killed was just a wolf. Remember that guy we ran into last time? When he told us to hide? We did, obviously, but they’re coming after us again. We need to change bases.” How could I forget...Ernis…
I shake my head and try to understand.
“But what are we even gonna do?” I panic, starting to pace.
“Whatever we plan on doing, we have to get out of here, befo-” We hear yells coming toward us. We immediately transform into bats, flying up into the trees.
“You think they’re here for us?” I harshly whisper to Jade. She gives me a look that even as a bat, I can easily interpret as “Shut-up-stupid-they’ll -hear-us”
“I could’ve sworn I heard something over here. There was also definitely a wolf near where we were.”
“What color did you say the wolf’s fur was?”
“Jet Black. There’s no way a regular wolf is that color.”
It’s my turn to glare at Jade. Jet Black? That’s definitely a description of Jade. We fly to another tree and quietly detransform. It’s really tiring to stay in bat form for too long.
Just as I’m about to transform back, a net falls over my head! Jade is right next to me and is tangled as well. An alarm starts blaring all around us.
Guards surround us.
Finally. Training’s over. I dress in shorts and a t-shirt and am just going on a leisurely stroll when I notice an annoying bird calling.
I turn to the tree to see…...a blue jay. Continuously squawking. I roll my eyes. Seeing that it captured my attention, it stops and starts flying away. Thank God. I start walking again but feel a beak at my head. The blue jay is on me now.
She’s just not going to leave me alone, is she?
I sigh. “Alright, alright, I’ll follow you. Take me to the ‘seer’ or whatever.” The bluejay flys off, slowly so I can follow.
I do, and pretty soon we’re in front of a dark purple tent. The blue jay flies away.
The flap of the tent is closed, and I don’t really know where I’m supposed to knock, so I just awkwardly stand to the side.
Thankfully, the seer opens the flap and ushers me inside.
It’s a magical wonderland in here! In the middle of the tent, there’s a small wooden table with a crystal ball on top of some pretty fabrics. There are two mats beside the table, and I plop down on one of them. The seer plops down on the other.
“So, um, I’m here?” I say. The seer (I should really learn her name) is smiling with her eyes closed. She finally opens her eyes and takes a deep breath.
“Indeed you are. Well, though I’m slightly surprised you decided to show up, I’m glad you came. Thankfully, in better clothes. Back to our previous conversation- I know the wolf killed that night was not a vampire.”
“Are you gonna tell me how exactly you know that, or no?”
“You humans, so impatient. Let me finish. You have a thing for rudely interrupting, don’t you? “
“Excuse me, but if I’m not mistaken, you’re a human too.”
“I’m a seer. That’ll be too complicated for you to understand now. Just listen, will you? I know you did what you did, for love. You could have very easily killed the vampires once you found them, but you didn’t. Moreover, you knew that the wolf your fellow soldiers killed was just a wolf, nothing more, yet you didn’t bother to tell them.”
“Riiiight. Love for what exactly?”
“Love for who, not what. Tell me, what comes to your mind when you see someone with red hair, hmm?” I try to keep my expression nonchalant as if I don’t remember Kat’s dark, blood-red hair. “Don’t worry… I don’t exactly know why Melody would put you two together, but the simple way to put it is that you’re soulmates. Your life is tied to hers.”
“Look, you aren’t making any sense at all-” I stop abruptly. My breathing feels very short all of a sudden, and my heart is beating faster as if I just started running.
“She’s in trouble. Which means you are too. Go!” I run out of the tent. I don’t really know what I’m doing anymore, but I run to my house, changing into my armor and grabbing my sword.
A TK(trainee knight*) comes up to me, looking as breathless as I for no reason feel.
“Sir….Ernis, Sir(panting), the captin (panting) wants you.” I nod and run towards the training grounds where everyone is running around.
I see the captain standing somewhere off to the side, talking to one of the dungeon guards.
“Captin!” I run up to him.
“Ernis. There is an urgent matter I need you to attend to. I have TK running all over the place, so while I’d rather deal with it myself, I’ll need you to go.” I nod. He runs off. I follow the dungeon guard.
“Um, what exactly do I need to do?” I ask the guard as we walk towards the underground dungeon.
“Zee Captin wishez for you to eeee interrogate zomeone, a new prizoner.” he says in an accent. Interrogate someone?! I haven’t done that in years! We reach the end of the tunnel and I soon hear a bunch of yells.
In front of one of the dungeon, cells is about 5 or 6 guards, all trying to hold down what looks like two prisoners.
I bite the hand of the guard who’s trying to shove me in the cell. Jade kicks one of em in the shins.
There’s too many though, and we’re soon sitting in the cell. I run a hand through my hair and sigh.
“Zee what information you can receive from them.” a gruff guard says, leaving the cell. In front of the cell now is...Ernis?!
There are guards everywhere though, and I don’t think it’s safe for us to show that we’ve met. I walk over to the farthest corner of the cell and plop down. Jade comes next to me.
Against my constant thoughts of don’t act up don’t act up don’t act up, my ears start turning towards Ernis.
I can tell Jade is trying to suppress her giggle, even though we’ve just been jailed.
I hear Ernis clear his throat so I look towards him.
“Prisoners. I’m going to need you to come towards the door of the cell, please." I roll my eyes. Do I really have to go?
“I’ll have to use more extreme measures if you won’t listen…” he says. I sigh and walk forward, Jade at my heels. Ernis’s eyes widen in recognition. At least now that I’m in front of him, my ears will stop turning.
“Er-um-I just remembered-something-Will you watch these prisoners?” he says to a guard, running off. I wince as my ears turn towards the direction he ran in.
Though it’s just calmed down from my capture, my heart starts beating faster and faster as if I’m the one running, not Ernis.
I sigh and sit down in the corner of the cell. It’s gonna be a long day...
