Tough Assignment

Submitted for Contest #47 in response to: Suitcase in hand, you head to the station.... view prompt

You head to the station, thankfully knowing your job is done here.

“I am so glad to be done,” you tell yourself.

Time is not considered where you come from, but being here felt like a lifetime.  To see, hear, and feel each second go by, and know how excruciating it can be in so many days while experiencing this world.  You wonder how you could have retained your sanity?

“Because there is hope,” you murmur.  “There are ones striving to be similar to life on other planets.  To better life, and evolve into a species that will brighten everything around it.”

You can practically picture the pinpoints of bright spots throughout the land in a sea of darkness.  Like a dark, thick sludge oozing everywhere to swallow up anything of good intentions.

You close your eyes as you stop for a moment.  A few deep breaths to clear the perversion seeping into your soul.

“No wonder the assignment here is a constant change,” your thoughts ponder.  “It doesn’t take long to be mentally exhausted here.”

You open your eyes, and continue your way to your destination that will lead to the light.

As soon as you stepped foot on this planet you know it would be a challenge.  You came from a place of brightness to a world where there is so much darkness.  You were told the race has populated this land for a decent amount of time, but unfortunately they continue to revert to the sins of their past.

“Heaven forbid if this race tries to spread to other universes.  They seem to never learn from their past mistakes.”

You have seen the ones who tried to learn be swallowed up by the ignorant who think they know better.  Fools!

“Do not let such thoughts cloud my mind,” you admonish yourself.  “There is a possibility.”

When you first received the report on this assignment you read about how this species had advanced mightily at one point, but let the shadow overwhelm them to the point where the Maker wiped out all but a few.  Having been on other assignments and heavy studies you have never witnessed such a thing happening anywhere else.

“Would it have been best to wipe out this species completely, and started with a newer one?” you asked.

There is always hope.  You only know a fraction of the full picture so don’t judge what you think needs to be done.

You should have known better, but in many eyes you are still young and learning.  It will always be a learning experience.  Just keep it going forward, and not let it digress.

“Always keep an open mind.  Always have a heart of compassion.  Always look at all sides before making any decision.  It is not your job to judge anyone.  You do not have authority to make rash decisions.  You are to observe and look for positivity.  They are still around so there is a larger picture here”,

You came to this world and immediately saw the abuse among the species.  Constant mental and physical abuse among many.  The intentional death of so many lives.  The abuse of the young who just started life.  A species where the ones who just entered this world should have joy before the darkness swallowed them up.  You watched their innocence taken away from them from the ones who were pure evil.  Despicable scum to destroy lives.

“I know why I have such thoughts of ugliness,” you say.

But, you did witness what life should be all about.  Love for each other.  Compassion.  Selflessness.  Sacrifice.  These are signs that there is still hope among this species.  Not all want to destroy each other.

This is one of the few worlds where only one particular species rules the land, and you are thankful for that.

“There are so many of them that are biased to another just because of their different color skin,” you say.  “Bias against their shape.  Bias of any kind of difference.”

You hate to ponder if there were different species put on this planet.  Chaos will reign.

It wasn’t a long assignment, even though it felt like it, and you saw many times where there were protests and riots over an issue dealing with prejudice over a difference.  You don’t think you have ever dealt with such ignorance among a species that ultimately is the same.

“Then the ones who have done good deeds are ridiculed for the sins they committed in the past.  This species doesn’t believe anyone can change to the better.  They are so prone to holding a grudge throughout their lives.  Instead of picking ones up they just keep knocking each other down.  They are the hypocrites.”

Even their so-called leaders were opposite of what they should be.  Instead of leading the people to a bright future they blindly lead the people into darkness.

You have not let frustration cloud your thoughts until you came to this land.

“You can be just a great race!” you want to scream at the top of your voice from the top of the highest peak.  “Just work together!”

And so, you did see signs of it.  Ones who is striving for advancement.  Ones who did not let greed lead their motives.  Ones who did not let their selfishness lead the way.  They weren’t proud of themselves for thinking they did well for their species.  Like a budding of a beautiful flower there are ones who are on the right path, and they will be rewarded.  They will be greeted with a job well done.  You want to be there to see some of it and rejoice.

“There is always a possibility of rejoicing among all species.”

You come to your destination.  You look around one last time and see ones that have promise.  If they would just believe in themselves.

“Time to leave.”

There was a beam of light and the suitcase firmly held you shot to your home.  The studied species thought there was a flash of light, but figured it was their imagination and moved on.

Excellent! Paints a vivid picture of this world, seemingly through the eyes of an angle. I enjoyed the story immensely.

Imaginatively crafted. Sci-fi meets philosophy :) What was in the suitcase, or did I miss it? ....Donuts / Hypocrite Bones? A well-told story, Corey. Thank you :)

Greatly thank you for the feedback. I was just thinking of all the notes he took while on Earth being in his suitcase, but I love the donuts/hypocrite bones. Also, discriminating videos that we see everyday on social media.

Perhaps why writing and writers are so important...escapism...if life were ideal no one would need to imagine a better place. Interesting read!

I really enjoyed the subtle world building that took place, like we're seeing a quick snapshot into this universe that you created. And the other worldly point of view that talks about human behavior made it a really good read. Thank you for writing this.

I love how what you wrote about is true, especially the part where you wrote about us bringing each other down instead of up. It says a lot about the world we live in, and I'm glad you wrote on this.

Thank you! I just wished we would all strive to uplift each other, but we continue to knock each other down.

Me, too. But this world is the way it is. We just have to be the ones to make small differences like these.

Thank you for the comments. Greatly appreciated. Majority of the time I only have so much time to write out a story, which I try to get done in a day's time while my creative juices are working away on what I'm writing so it can be vague at times.
